Seattle.
The Croat fire in Portland yester
day is a warning to every one hero to
be careful that the disaster i3 aot re
peated in Astoria.
Dr. Wandory writes to have The
Astobiax sent to him at Pomona, Los
Angeles Co., California. Ho has
located there and writes favorably of
the country and clini&te.
The mayor of Taunton, Mass.,
has ordered the police force of that
city to "visit the saloons as often as
possible." Applications for 3 place
on the force aro daily increasing.
Captain Sewell and the second
mute and steward of the ship El Capi.
tin, recently tried in the U. S. courts
for cruel treatment to sailors, were
acquitted in Portland last Friday.
Jaa. Lacy, the convict who re
cently oscaped from Seatco, was
caught a few days ago, and sent back
to more comfortable quarters. He is
the man who tried to steal a hot
stove
Columbia river freights are "way
down" this season. The lowest yet
reportod are the Henry Villard, to
load wheat for Cork at forty shillings;
end tho El Capitan at a presumed
rato of thirty-eight. Last year twice
these rates was a common figure.
Uttle is troubled over the fact
that the teredo borea the piles and
nuns them, and wants an establish
ment for the preservation of wharf
timbers, etc; copper sheathinjj is loo
expensive. Piles driven here twenty
years ago are still strong and sound.
It was Thos. Jefferson who said,
"I would rather live in a country with
ntwspapers and no jjovcrnment, than
in n country with a government and
no newspapers." It will ho noticed
that Jeff is held in high esteem by his
countrymen. Wo would send him a
copy of The Daily Astoeiax if wo
knew his present address.
Is it not possible that the railroad
people havo chosen an icy crossing for
their ferry at tho foot of Deer Island?
During a freeze-up of the lower Co
lumbia the ico frequently has been
piled up to an impenetrable thickness
at Coffin rock several miles below
Deer Island. Would it not bo better
to go ten or fifteen miles further
down to a point just below tho Walker
Island shoals!
Yesterday's east wind smoothed
the bar and two morcof '83's wheat
fleet went to sea the Eskdale and
Fulda. The Columbia came in and
proceeded up; to-day tho Tam
O'Shanter, Pendragon, General Fair
child and Wilna go to sea the latter
drawing twenty-two feet. The Selene
has discharged her coal, and may
jo up to-day; seldom havo wo aoen
lower water in tho Columbia than yos
terday afternoos, an unusual ebb
tide.
The General Miles towed tho
Garfield out of Gray's harbor, yes
terday morning, and then came
on to Astoria with 39,000 feet
of lumber and some salmon, the last
of J. W. Hume's pack at Hoquium.
The Canby unloaded forty-six sacks
of oysters for San Francisco; tho
Clara Parker caaie down with a big
load from Cowlitz; tho Astoria boats
are all doing well, with plenty busi
ness on hnnd.
The Chronicle, Call and ISuIUtin
have sent us severally and individu
ally nino printed sheets, each contain
ing the new charter of the city of San
Francisco. Wo had j"st finished the
third reading of that brilliant bro
chure entitled "Charter of the Citv of
Astoria," and while fully appreciating
the kindness of our San Francisco est.
coxu's wo must defer any critical re
view of the instrument submitted to
our inspection till fully recovered
from our present exhaustion.
During the latter part of this
season it is expected the salmon pack
ers of Astoria will have the ohoice of
shipping salmon to Chicago, St. Louis
and New Orleans by either one of two
routes. One will be by tho O. It. &
S. Co. aad 2. P. R. R. Co. The
other will bo by steamer or sail to San
Francisco and thence eastward by tho
Central Pacific and its connections.
In both cases the rates from Astoria
to the points named will probably be
the hbs. It will be simply a ques
tie of ekoiee.
"JSOT GUILTY."
The Bain Case Concluded.
The jury in tho case of John Bain
charged with the murder of Alex
ander Lowrie Alexander, brought in a
verdict of not guilty, at 6:40 last even
ing. Yesterday throughout tho eutiru
day the court room was densely
packed, many being unable to gain
admittance. By half-past ten tho
evidence whs all in and District At
torney McBride made a twenty
minute argument, followed by Judge
Bowlby for the dtfense, who spoke
about half an hour, when court ad
journed. Upon reassembling, C. W.
Fulton, counsel for the pritonor,
spoko fer an hour and a half, coiag
over the case in detail and making a
strong ploa for the piisoner. Ho was
followed by Mr. McBride who closed
the case, after which Judge Bennett
summed up the ease, and the jury
retired at 4:30. They were out two
hours; tho first ballot was nine for
acquittal and three for conviction of
manslaughter: the final result a3
announced. Among the remarks
upon the verdict surprise was not
manifest.
Jas. McCarty and Wm. Bnni3ter
were each sentenced to (hreo years
in the penitentiary yesterday morning.
The case of Riley comes up to-day.
Cold "Weather.
Tho delicate tracing of the frost
upon tho windowpane, though an
unusual sight in Astoria, was a
common one yesterday, and the keen,
icy blast from the northeast kept the
mercury down throughout the day.
Stovepipes, overcoats, wood and water
were in demand; the latter commodity
commanded a rising market, and n
small army of Chinamen besieged
private wells for water made necessary
by the freezing of the pipes, Yester
day morning the thermometer indica
ted ten degrees above zero and varied
but little during the day. A warm
fire was the greatest attraction and
many wero the reminiscences concern
ing former "cold snaps." Toward
nightfall the cold moderated some
what, and about eight o'clock the va
riety of climato was still further
augmented by a light fall of snow.
Tho river is exceedingly low, caused
by the freezing of the tributaries, the
heavy cast wind, and the present
extraordinary ebb tides. Tho cold
wavo extends ovor a wide area. It
struck central California last Tuesday,
extending from L03 Angeles, over the
Sierras throughout Nevada, and
extending north w aid. East of the
mountains at Dayton, the thermome
ter stood twelve degrees below zero.at
noon yesterday; the river was frozen
over; at Portland last evening the
Willamette was skimming over with
ice; fears are entertained that there will
be a general freeze up, and a blockade
above Astoriaof all craft but the ocean
steamers. Around at Skipanon and
Lewis and Clark's, yesterday, there
was ice strong enough to bear one's
weight; there will be a skating excur
sion to the former place to-morrow.
A Big Blaze
At a quarter to three j'esterday
morning a fire broke out in the Sun
nyside Restaurant, in Portland, and
before it could be checked extended
to tho largo establishment of Corbett
and MacLeay which wan completely
destroyed, involving a I083 of $350,
000. Tho intense heat and the fierce
ness of the blaze was something phe
nomenal, the great iron doors becom
ing red hot and bursting with the
violence of the flames. The estab
lishment of Knapp & Burrell was also
injured to a considerable extent. An
other fire on Oak street between Front
and First destroyed a row of wooden
buildings. There was no general
alarm; tho fire department worked
hard and at half past fivo had suc
ceeded in getting tho fire completely
under control.
Meeting.
The annual meeting of tho Clatsop
County Bible Society will be held in
the Presbyterian church this evening
at 7:30. Reports of officers and elec
tion of officers for ensuing year. A

A Weather Sharp.
On a Woodward avenuo car yes
tsrday ono cf our solid citizens,
whoso weather predictions havo never
been disputed since he was rated
worth $50,000, remarked to an ac
quaintance that this was unusual
weather for the List of December.
He had hardly spoken when an old
man with a bundle under his arm
hopped up and replied:
"It is, ehl I'd just bet you An
eren dollar that you are mistaken."
"No, air! I'll bet you two to one
that wc had just such r December
week three, fire and eight years ago.
Put up your cash."
"Oh, I don't bet on ihu weather;
still I think such soft weather at
this time of the year U singular."
"Bet you three to one it isn't
singular!" cried tho old man.
"I told you I wouldn't bet."
'Then don't ba deceiving people
with your weather talk! Bet you
four to one you can't tell what the
weather was in September."
The solid citizen was bluffed into
silence for a moment, and then he
remarked:
"Looks as it wo might have snow."
''Bet you five to one we don't see
a flake this week!" piped the old
man. "How can you expect snow
when the air isn't cold enough to
congeal this moisture?"
"Then it may rain."
"No it won't. Bet you six to one
you never saw rain with the wind
where it is!"
"Well, tho barometer indicates a
storm of some sort!" shouted the
solid man.
"I'd tako you on that, too, and bet
you seven to one that it doesn't."
The prophet seemed about to haul
out a dollar, but he changed his mind
and fell back in his seat and grewled:
"Maybo my thermometer doesn't
stand at fifty-four degrees above."
"No, sir! No, sir! I'd bet you eight
to one that you are at least three de
grees out of tho way. Come, now!"
But the solid roan came not. Free
