Asterian: My "experience" in this city im pels me to offer fur publication the follewing: TO THE "SEXTANT." 0 sextant of the meeting house, which sweeps And dusts, or is supposed to! and makes fires, And lites the eass, and sometimes leaves a screw loose, In 'wich case it smells nrful, worse than lamp ile; And wrings the hel and toles it when men dyes, To the jjrief of snrvivin pardners, and sweeps paths And for the scrvusses gets $100 per annum. Wich them that thinks deer, let 'era try it; Gettin up before Btarlito in all wethers and Kindlin fires when the weather is as cold ks 2ro, and like as not green wood for kindlin i wouldn't bo hired to do it for no sum, But O Sextant' there arc 1 kermud- dity Wich's moro than gold, wich doant cost nothin, Worth more than anything except the sole of man! i mean power .ire, i mean pewer are! 0 it is plenty out of doors, so plenty it doant no What on airth to do with itself, but flys about Scatterin leaves and bloin off men's hats! In short, it's jist as "fre as are" out dores But 0 Sextant', in our church its scarce as buty, Scarce as bank bills, when agints beg3 for mischuns, Which some say is purty offten (taint nothin to me, wot I give aint nothin to nobody) but 0 Sextant CJsbet 500 men, wimmin and children, Speshally the latter, up in a tite place, m jrn brethea in and out, in, - fiinit, or 1 million and a half breeths an our. And how long will a church f ul of aro last at that rate, I ask you say 15 minits and then wats to be did? Why then they must breathe it all over again, And then again, and so on till each has look it down At least ten times, and let up again, and wats more, The same individual don't have tho privilege of breathin his own are, and no one else, Each one must take whatever comes to him. O Sextant, doant you no our lungs is bcllusses, To bio the Oer of life, and keeps it from goin out; and how can how can bellnses bio without wind And aint wind arc? i put it to your conschens. Are is the same to us as milk to babies, Or water is to Gsh, or pendlums to clox, Or roots and airbs unto an injun doc tor, Or little pills unto an omepath, Or boys to gnrls. Are is for us to breath, What signifios who preaches if i can't breathel Wats Pol? Wats Pollus to sinners who aro ded? Ded for want of breth, why Sextant, -when we dy xlSiuiry cos we cant ureamo no more, thats all. And now, O Sextant, let me beg of yon To let a little are into our church. (Pewer are is scrtain proper for tho pews) And do it weak daj-s and Sundays tow. "t aiui much trouble, only make a h'o And the are will come of itself; (It Iitv tu come in where it can git warm)- And O how it will rouze the people up, And speirit'up the preacher, and atop garps, Ami yawns and fijgits, as effectooal At wiigd on the dry boans the Profit tells of. A Medicine of real merit, prescribed Vy bt leading physicians, and imi vcrsaHy rccomtocuded by those who hare ed it, M a true tonic, is Brown' Iron Bitters. cjmi Iw rest at Carl Adler's. Paring Escape. A wonderfully daring escape was made lajt week hy a premier from Millhauk prison. The con vict, Lnvptt by name, contrived to make a hole through his cell by picking jnva the mortar. Tins must hav hMMi tli work of veral weeks, if not month, ami to con ceal the siijns f lit, work chewed hreu.il w:i usf 1 to replace the mortar until he was ready to make the attempt at escape. "While at work-in the yard upon one occasion he picked up and secreted a pieco of thick old rope, and this he re made and lengthened, adding to it strips from his clothes. All being ready for the attempt, he black ened his face with soot he had pro cured from the work-shop chimney, the idea being to make himself a chimneysweep. The soot, mixed with water, was also used to rub into his prison garments, which being plentifully besprinkled with broad arrows, would otherwise have looked suspicuous. In lower ing himself to the ground the con vict fell a distance of thirty feet, through his rope breaking, and cut his hand severely; but this circumstance materially assisted his escape as he retained part of the rope in his possession and finding in the 'ard two pieces of piank, lashed them together, placed them against the wall and climbed up, then drawing his plank after him lie laid them on the other side and slid down. So effectual was his disguise that he actually passed a number of police without exciting any remark. He was at liberty a week, and but for the efforts of his friends in "passing around the hat" to raise a sub scription to enable him to leave the country he might still have been at large.
