- O) " ?".'-'' m r g - ;&, -a Itftf I'M 7 Vol. xvm. Astoria. Oregon, Tuesday Morning January 9, 1883 SrwrgteiA 4 ii 11 ! EASTERN CRITICISM. I.ikxll uew countries Oregon ha suiTerod from the extremes of jiuiise ami censure. The sell-satis-ll'l old inhabitant, whom an io!:i-i?-n and rich fann-lanrls has made ladifiVicnt to the rush of tiie out sidr rorld and independent of its jxeedy exactions, the eliinate, soil, all the conditions of his beloved country, are as such to niako Paradise a secondary considera tion. To him the rain of the Ore gon winter possesses the miracu lous property of wanning and even drying all substances with which it is brought into contact, and t-ho drought of the Oicgon sum mer, by some equally remarkable process, keeps all vegetation sup plied with moisture. On the other hand, to the impecunious immigrant, weary after weeks of searching for some impossible country where wealth without sagacity or labor 'n the common lot, the fust little drizzle that lays the autum dust seems a month of sunless tonn, an 1 the bracing northeaster f summer is like the sirocco of the desert. To the former, bound to he suited with everything, the wildest, windiest, sandiest plains of the interior are 'the finest stock range in the world, sir!" aud the most forbid- dinir juuq-les of the coast rcrnon are the best timber lands on the, continent. To the latter, bound j to be suited with nothing, the vast rolling plains, where crass ami flowers figh for superiority, are i fit only for the sage brush, jack rabbits, coyotes and rattlesnakes, and the forest trees. 00 feet high, j and forty to fifty to each acre, are j simply obstacles to the plow. The unsanitary condition of certain towns in the United States has drawn attention to the fact that wooden houses, and especially wooden foundations, arc liable, after a certain time, to caase malarious s'inptoms. So many malarious attacks have boon ex perienced of late years in San 1'rancisco, that the medical men teegiit to suspect tho buildings, especially as the structures them selves, which are nearly all built of vrooden foundations, begin to show disturbances, cracks appear ing in the walls and the floors set tling. Scientific investigation into the cause of these troubles points to the fact that the wood used in the foundations becomes decayed by contact with the soil, which de stroys its fibre and leaves it porous and brittle. The next slaire in the progress is the formation of a iungous growth from the edge of the wood, composed of infinit esimal insect life, which burrows the remaining wood until its vitality is gone, and the insect itself dies. Physicians attribute many of the unpleasant smells and bad health that hang about the inhabitants of these dwellings to this malarial condition, which to a great extent disappears as soon as proper foun dations are substituted for the wooden ones. Exchange. It has been discovered that bea vers are at work constructing a dam over Feather river at Oroville, near the Cape claim, just, above the large bridge. The industrious lit tle builders have already cut down a good-sized cotton tree, to be used in their work. As beaver dams arc never carried away by floods, it may be possible that the one building over Feather river will hold back some of the debris that is washed down from the mines, much belter than auy dams that have yet been put up by scientific builders.
