The Astoria ami Oljmpia Mail.
Commenting on the miserable
lack o mail facilities between
here and Olympia, the Transcript
says: The postal department at
"Washington has done nothing yet
toward having the mails carried
on the Olympia and Astoria mail
route, although over a week has
passed and everything connected
with it has been telegraphed to
"Washington. Unfortunately the
star route scare is having its ef
fect and the department is going to
the other extreme. The contract for
carrying temporarily, made by
Postmaster Gale with Mr. Loomis,
the department refuses to allow,
and.it docs not even offer as much
as it allowed the Mormon contrac
tor, Campbell, for carrying it. It
is nearly 200 miles in length, sup
plies 14: post-offices and about
3.000 neonlo with their mails. It
passes through two counties, and
is the only means of communica
tion from those county scats and
the outside world; it is the only
means of communication with the
sawmills of Gray's Harbor and
Shoalwater Bay, the Quinait reser
vation, and with all the business
men of Pacific and Chehalis coun
ties. Of late, three steamers and
three stage lines, connecting
various points have been employed,
and the amount allowed b' con
tract was not sufficient to carry
the mail. For this reason it is
likely the department believes it
to be a star loute. Such is not
the case; but it is one of the hard
est and most dangerous routes on
the American continent, and those
who carry it should be sufficiently
remunerated for doinjr so.
Tiik United States const survey
steamer Hasslcr arrircd in San
rrancisco last J nursdav lrom a
seven months' cruise in northern
latitudes, principally about the
southern shores of Alaska. Im-
-portant surveys of channels and
jiiuwuis were uiauc. oaverai -excellent
harbors were discovered
and quiift a number of rocks snd
reefs heretofore unknown were
laid down in the charts. The
whole coast is a network of islands.
There are no fresh water streams
in that part of the country that
can be navigated by deep-water
ships. The officers speak in glow
ing terms of the wonderful forests
of the country which cover the
islands and mainland. Yellow
cedar, spruce and cypress trees
grow in abundance, and for quality
cannot be surpassed in other
localities. Notrouble was experi
enced with the 'Indians, and the
supply of provisions was frequently
replenished by venison, ducks,
trout and salmon, all of which
abound in great numbers.
CniKF Engineer "Wright recent
ly testified before the Mississippi
river improvement committee that
the works for lessening the iridth
of the river and for protecting its
banks were accomplishing their
objects as far as the' have pro
gressed. He had the fullest faith
in them, and did not doubt the
correctness of the theory upon
which the' were being built. No
money had been wasted in the
purchase of plants. It nas prac
ticable to confino the river within
a bed 3,500 feet in width, from
Cairo down, but he could not at
present estimate the expense. So
far as navigation is concerned, the
narrowing of the river bed is need
ed only in a low water stage. If
the works now building are suc
cessful, it will show the feasibility
of erecting the same works at dif
ferent points.
Henry Carey Baird, a lead
ing protectionist, in a recent inter
view concerning the tariff, thinks
that the actions of the tariff com
mission are likely to be extremely
disastrous to the protective indus
tries of the country, as well as to
every other legitimate business
interest. "The defeat of the
Republican party last fall, and its
prospective loss of power in the
next congress, followed up by the
report of a commission which was
supposed to be formed in the inter
est of protection, have demoralized
the protectionists in and out of
cengress: and unless public inter
est is made manifest, and that
immediately, in opposition. to the
report of this commission, those
who have hitherto been ranked as
protectionists in congress are likely
to concede the whole fight."
