Inquisitive Tax-Payer. Kaigkts f JPytliia. S C.C. 15. Wilson. K. of K. & S. Christmas Eve. In the churches and in many Asto ria homes there are to-day Christmas trees, tho branches of which bear tho most wonderful and diverse fruit, ready ripe for picking and of pleasant flavor to the recipient. This is a cheerful custom that annually brings remembrances from friends and loving relatives, and is a fitting prelude to tho observance of tho great festival of the closing year Xmas commemo rative of the birth of the Savior amid Judca's snow-clad hills. On these mois; shores the biting blasts and bit ter cold, the usual accompaniment of Christmas time, are wanting; with us the hardiest of the flowers still bloom in the gardens, the sun is warm at noon above the green sloping hills and the warm breath of the Pacifie fans the cheek and keeps alive the natural beauty of tho outer world. Under rude oastern skies, amid sleet and fee, the idea of Christmas is associated with furs and wrappings, with sleigh rides and roaring chimney places where great logs burn and the frost is thick on the window-pane. But in all latitudes tho governing idea is the same uhere ever the joyful Christmas anthems are sunsr or tho voices of youth sound in glee over their treasured gifts. The observ ance of the festival as a religious one is in the minds of many a secondary consideration, yet there arc millions of dovout souls who pray in fervent thanks to the God who sent his Son on earth to regenerate and redeem an erring world. However this may be looked at, whether with belief or skepticism, the associations of the hour arc of so joyous and sociable a nature that the whole human family is filled with a kindlier foeling for each other, and in this lies the greatest charm of the day. The Port Townicnd A rgus and other Washington Territory papers are de servedly scoring the editor of the Springfield Republican, who came odt here and listening to all that a little clique told him, and view ing everything through their eyes, wrote a series of letters to his paper in which in some instances his statements were in direct opposition to the facts. His assumption of knowledge of a country through which he passed in tho night, is only equaled in cheek by tho effort of a man who went on a flying trip from New York to Vera Cruz, got thero on the 30th of December, 1871, left on his return trip Jan. 2d, 1872, and on his arrival back in New York, wrote a book entitled "Mexico in 1871-72." teicE er the peopli:. Roberts in his lecture on ,fDigestion." He says that the general practice of eating the oystsr raw is evidence that tho popular judg ment on matters of diet is usually trustworthy. Tho fawn-colored mass, which is tke delicions portion of the fish, is its liver and is simply a mass of glycogen. Associated with the glycogen, but withheld from actual contact with it during life, is its ap propriate digestive ferment tha hepa tic diastase. The mere crushing of the oyster between the teeth brings these two bodies together, and the glycogen is at once digested without any other help than the diastase. The raw, or merely warmed, oyster is solf digestive. But tho advantage of this provision is wholly lost by cooking; for the heat immediately destroys the associated ferment, aud a cooked oys ter is digested, like any other food, by the eater's own digestive powers. "My dear sir, do you want to ruin vonr digestion?" asked Professor Houghton, of Trinity college, ono day of a friend who had orderod braudy and water with his oysters in a Dublin restaurant. Then ho sent for a glass of brandy and a glass of Guinness'a XX, and put an oyster in each. In a very shor time thore lay in the bottom of the glass of braudy a tough, leathery substance resembling the finger of a kid glove, while in the porter there was hardly a trace of the oyster to be found.
