The Christmas ship at the Con gregational church, this evening, will be a novel feature. At the Presbyterian church on Sunday morning Christmas sermon; in the evening children's praise service and general Sunday school review. A little gleam of sunshine yester day morning filled the streets with crowds of people utilizing the few hours of fine weather in buying Christ mas presents. Tiie quarterly examination of those wishing to obtain toacher's certificates in this county will begin next Friday, the 28th inst., at 0 a. m., at the court-house. -The Columbia arrived in yester day morning; the Mississippi went out; the Gen. Fairchild camo down from Portland; the Walla Walla is outside, with coal from Seattle. Cooper, a candidate for sheriff in Clallam Co., W. T.,at the last elec tion, receiwed ever' vote cast in the county except his own. This is ahead of the Cleveland victory in New York. Capt Davis, lighthouse inspector, gives notice that the whistling buoy, which was placed ono and one-quarter miles outside of the bar at Coos bay, has gone adrift and will beroplaced as soon as possible. Under date of the 10th inst., F. C. Reed writes us from North Wool wich, Maine, that he is enjoying an eastern winter as well as a Webfoot can enjoj- the hard dry frosts of the Atlantic coast. By reference to an other column it will be seen that when he returns he will not be alone. Instructions have been received to submit estimates for an additional set of quarters for a battery of artillery, and for a set of field officers' quarters at Fort Canby, the General of the Army having decided that the Fort shall be maintained as a two company post, to bo garrisoned by artillery. The published financial statement of Washington Territory show3 there has teen an increase in property value sinco 1881 in 18 counties ag gregating $7,087,840, while in eight counties there has been a decrease amounting in all to $309,358. This makes a net gain in property value of $0,780,582. There is a moral in evervihinz if people will only look for it. A few days ago the boiler of a distilleiy at San Francisco had just been cxaminnd and pronounced safe, when it blew up and killod the inspector. The moral is perhaps not so obvious in this case as in that of the little boy who was drowned because lie went fishing on Sunday, but it can be got at. The telegraph operator at St. Paul, Minn., thus clectricatcs: "The lowest range of the mercury at the Bignal office for tho last twenty four hours was 18.5 degrees below zero, though some private thermome ters show 25 decrees below. Tho usual exaggerated reports are received of the severity of the cold at various points, but are not believed." We would like to get his idea of what a cold day is. Most folks would get left in experiencing such figures as the above. Under the name of tho Oregon Southern Railway and Transportation company, a corporation is now form ing in this city to build a railroad from Coos bay to Boscburg, and alio to run a steamer between the first mentioned ioint and San Francisco. The proposed road would be about ninety miles in length; would pass through a number of rich valleys and connect the only good harbor on the Oregon coast south of the Columbia river with the principal distributing point for southwestern Oregon, viz: Roseburg. S. F. Alia. It is sajd of tho return certifi cates now issued to all Chinamen leaving for homo, that they will all be used, whether the Chinamen to whom they were issued ever return or not. John treasures his return cer tificate as he would a certificate of deposit. He can convert it into money in China, and then get back himself through a side door, as it were, without one. He knows the ropes, and in this respect has the ad vantage of his untraveled countryman at home, who eagerly purchases the document at almost any price, though it leaves him barely enough money to pay his passage over here. Tarkey Bafle At the Olympic saloon at two o'cloek tale afternoon. I How they Run the "Masheea' in I Seattle. When the alarm of fire was sounded last Saturday morning in Seattle, the two steam lire engines were "doad." One was run out, and while steam was being mado the fireman went for the other, a new machine lately received, and the way they got it to the fire is told by the Herald: In the flurry of the excitement they miecalculated the number of men necessary to manage it. The steamer was got out of the engine house and inn down to the upper end of the slip where the grade is very steep, and the planking being entirely free from anything that wou,d temj to irapede hs progreM R difficnU to hand, weighing, as it does, about one and a half tuns. There was a man on the engine whose duty it was to put on the brakes, but as soon as the descent was encountered and the motion was increased, ho became alarmed and jumped off. The men on the tongue were then compelled to let go or get killed, and as a natural result the engine went crashing down until it struck ono of the fenders at the edge of the wharf, breaking it and going overboard in about four feet of water where it remains. One man a promi nent gentleman, eugaged in the hard ware business, who requests that hia name should not be mentioned, held on to tho tongue until the engine struck. He was thrown about twenty feet and lit in the water, but was res cued, receiving nothing more serious than a wetting. By the lime that matters were got in readiness to apply water the fire had gained considerable headway. General Cargo Adjusted. The general average in tho case of the steamship Columbia, which ran aground about tho 21st of March last while entering the harbor of San Francisco, in a fog, has been adjusted. The owneis of the tugs Monarch and Wizard, which rendered her assist ance, made a claim for salvage which, after consultation with the under writers interested, was submitted to arbitration. The appoilionment was fixed at 7.011 44 per cent. The cargo valued at $43,848.32, pays $3,074.40; the vessel valued at $309,130.60 pays $25,881.37; freight valued at $2,144. 48 P33S $150.30; total, $415,123.40, pays $29,100.13. From the above some idea of the expense connected with a slight accident to a .ste.unsliip may be formed. Oreyonian. Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Jay Rial company appeared at Liberty Hall last evening and gave a performance of Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe's beautiful play uf Uncle Tom's Cabin. The company is stronger than last 3'ear.
