OREGON: "WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 20. 1882 Tornadoes in the United States. The Signal Service office has made a study of the GOO tornadoes recorded in the United States" dur ing the past 87 years, and finds that such storms most frequently occur in June. While they are liable to swoop down at any hour of the twenty-four, they generally do their work between five and six r. 31.; tornadoes always move with an eastward motion, and their average path of destruction is only about a fifth of a mile; they pre vail chiefly in the west, and Kan sas leads in the list among states in that section, having experienced G2 in 23 years. Although accurate statistics are still lacking there seems to be no doubt that the month of June this year brought more storms than any previous one, the best estimates putting the loss of life by tornadoes during that month at 150, while about 400 persons were wounded, and the damage to property aggiegated about 85,000,000. A fire occuned in Washington City, on the evening of the IGth. iu the third floor of a building on F street, mainly occupied as a law office by Richard D. Merrick, principal counsel for the govern ment in the star route cases. The fire was undoubtedly incendiary, and Merrick asserts that it" was for the purpose of destroying import ant papers in the star routo cases, which were known to be in his office. The fire was promptly ex tinguished, with the loss of a few hundred dollars, but no papers of consequence were injured. Remarkable for penetration and mysterious in action is St. Jacobs Oil. Brown's Iron Bitters is one of the very few tonic medicines that are not com posed mostly of alcohol or whiskey, thus becoming a fruitful source of intemper-ance-by promoting a desire for rum. Brown's Iron Bitters is guaranteed to be a non intoxicating stimulant, and it will, in nearly every case, take the place of all liquor, and at the same time abso lutely kill the desire for whiskey and other intoxi cating beverages. Rev. G. W. Rice, editor of the American Christian Re vieiu, says of Brown's Iron Bitters: Gn.,0.,Nov. i6,iSSr. Gents : The foolish wast ing of vital force in business, pleasure, and "vicious indul gence of our people, makes your preparation a necessity; and if applied, will save hun dreds who resort to saloons for temporary recuperation.
