One thing is certain about thee short days they can't get much shorter. Read Frank Elberaon's adv., and if you want good wholesome bread you will patronize his establishment. Jeff Simpson, a young man twenty-one years of age, was killed at a lo&Ring camp at King's valley on tho 12th inst. We have gas works and water works, in prospecto, and yet wo are not happy. There is no adequate means of getting to or from upper town. Yaquina is going to orgauizo a life-saving service. Six lives have been ledt there that it is believed might have been saved by proper ap pliances. Tho senate bill authorizing I ho sale of tho old custom-house site at upper town lias been reported upon favorably by the committee on pub lic lauds. The annual meeting of the stock holders of the Masonic land and building association will be held at Capt. Flavel's office at two o'clock this afternoon. Not wishing to intorfere with the Baptist church entertainment last evening, Carl Adler had no auction aale. The regular afternoon and even ing sales will be resumed to-day. One who has given the subject the attention its importance demands, assures us that after January 1st we will have the severest weather known in this locality for twenty years. That leaves us eleven days in which to save enough to buy a $5 overcoat. Parties living in the neighborhood of tho Weston House complain of folks who want to be funny and don't know how, who ring door bells and make disturbance in front yard. The man that we saw last about the natter says "some one will get his skin full of holes if he isn't careful." Nearly every one that has a spare dollar or two is investing in Christ mas presents this week. There is a handsome display from which to choose, and the stocks brought here this season aro the largest, most valu able and display tho greatest variety of any ever before offered for sale in Astoria. At the annual meeting of the di rector of tho Columbia Canning com pny held at upper Astoria last Satur day, the following directors were elected: N. Johansen, Thos. Dealey, Ja. Tatton, R. Johnson, B. Galla gher. The following officers were chesen: N. Johansen, president; Thos. Dealey, secretary. The Georgetown, Col., Miner of November 25th, says that it is a grave question whether legal notices printed in a "patent outside" or "patent in aide" sheet are not illegal and void, and adds: "Wo have been personally assured within the past few months, by the land office authorities at Wash ington, that such publications are un doubtedly illegal." This is a matter that intimately concerns those who file on lands and need advertising in this vicinity. Two of a Kind. An Ostrich Hatchery. J The first consignment of ostriches has arrived in San Francisco.. It ib tho in- tention to start a farm for tho culture of theso large birds, near Borden, Fresno I' Co., Cal. Wo have concluded to wait until further developments warrant , the expense, before bringing to Aeto ; ria the two ostriches we spoke of in a ! previous issue. However, it is pleas i ing to know that there is an ostrich factory so near as California, from which we can receive regular and cor rect information concernins theso 1 birds which were brought from Chi cago, in a Union Pacific baggage oar attached to a regular overland train. A stove in the center of the car kept the temperature up to a Cape Town pitch, even while crossing the moun tains, and except as to the frequent j change in the character of rocks they wero given for dessers, the birds never knew but that they were still in the neighbood of Africa's red-hot clay so manifold are tho wonders of America's railroad traveling. Recently a S. F. Call reporter paid his respects to the visitors from Africa, and was cordially received losing two vest buttons and n watch charm in the round. Tho birds seemed a little impatient at their confinement, and would prob ably manifest their displeasure by kicking down the sides of tho car save for the recompensing fun of fool ing with tho visitors. A railroad-yard man named Wheeler visited the birds frequently and became quite friendly with one 250-pound hen. Delighted with his supposed discovery that tho birds were perfectly tamo, harmless and well behaved, Wheeler invited some friends into tho car to see him pet tho animal. He boldly stroked tho head of his particular pet. His friends observed and wondered. Sud denly there was a lightning stroko of the petted bird's head, and a ten dol lar gold ring on Wheeler's hand disap peared and slowly twisted its way down the well-behaved ostrich's throat. Theso ostriches weigh on an average 250 pouuda each, stand seven and eight feet high, andare worth$l,000 a pair. Despite their high price there is nothing more ridiculous-looking than one of these ostriches, except two or more ostriches. The length and extreme thiness of their necks, the amazing bigness of their mouths, the docile mildness of their big, round, brown eyes, the sturdy poddiness of their bodies, supported on thin flesh- less legs, and their big, kicking feet, aro said to constitute as complete a cartoon as can be imagined. Many people have doubtless thought the flippant newspaper stories about the digestion and peculiarities of diet of the ostrich wero unwarrantable slanders. It is a fact, however, that a regular article of diet of all domestica ted ostriches is broken rock. Ordi nary rock is broken to the size of hickory nuts and fed to them ad libitum. They not only enjoy it, but object vigorously if their regular dose of macadam is withheld from them. They do not object to mixing their drinks, so to say, for their keeper re ports that they took the ocean peb bles in Now York, crushed marble in Pennsylvania, broken sand-stone in Ohio, fragmentary granite in Illinois, and busted bowlders in Montana with equal dignity and relish. They re belled only once, and that was at Reno, where they wero given some desiccated prophyry horse from tho Comstock. That nearly created a riot, and order was not restored until they were treated to some pieces of basalt blocks in Rocklin. The bodies of tho male birds are covered with black and white feathers, tho females aro mouso colored, as to. feathers, throughout. The birds are clipped for their marketable feathers every seven months, tho first clipping occurring six months aftar they are born. The increase is enormous under the artificial hatching process adopted on most of the farms. The birds lay from fifty to ninety eggs per year, and in the incubators not more than five per cent aro lost. Al though called domestic, these birds are not so in the sense that they are perfectly tame. They are blinded by a stocking being drawn over their heads while being clippod, and it is only when blinded, in fact, that they can be handled at all. They food on ordinary cattle or horse fodder, in ad dition to their rock rations. The man in charge is confident that tho experiment will provo a success, and if it docs, ostrich farms will be come 10 common in California as to make the strange, tropical looking creaturo as common to the sight of the country travelers as is now the unassuming jack rabbit and retiring gopher. Buy a dol lar worth and you may get it Suit for Damages- Suit was cemmenced in the state circuit court yesterday, by A. W. Evans to recover 20,000 from tho O. R. tf N. Co. Tho complaint alleges that while a passenger from San Francisco to this city, on the com pany's steamship Queen of tho Pa cific, plaintiff was cruelly, willfully and maliciously assaulted, beaten and imprisoned, and that handcuffs and irons wero forcibly put upon him, and that he was maliciously exposed to the rain and weather, and other wise injured in the amount of $20, 000. W. Scott Beebe is counsel for plaintiff. It appears that Evaus, who hails from Syracuse, N. Y., created a disturbance on board the Queen by using disgustingly vulgar language in the presence of yirls and women. The father of the girls requested him to stop, and was treated to a repetition of tho language, when he complained to Capt. Alexander, who sent orders for Evaus to go forward out of the way of the lady passengers, and upon his disobeying he was put in irons. After a short time he was set at lib erty. Orcgonian.
