tj" ..J (V ght gailg Q&BXfaru ASTORIA. OREGON: FRIDAY DECEMBER 15, 18R2 A Costly Repast. Dcluionico says the costliest private dinner he ever served was given 15y a well-known society man to ten of his friends, at a cost of only 500 a cover. The dinner was luxurious enough to be classi cal. The bills of fare he provided him'self, and he insisted on the waiters, five in number, beincr dressed as sailors. He was a yachtsman, and he bought their clothes, and he sent for them next daj' to dress as sailors on his own yacht. The guests tasted every! vinted liquor ever brought to America, and finished with a poussc cafe made of eleven wines. The bill of fare was the feature of the dinner. Before each plate sat a cut-fflass basin, about twenty inches in diameter, and four inches deeu. Each was nearly filled with water, perfumed with attar of roses, on the surface of which floated a half-dozen pond lilies. In the basin a perfect model of the yacht owned by the gentleman was placed. It was cut in red cedar wood, with cabin, rail, wheel for steering, brass works, main ropes, worked and trimmed with sailor knots, scraped pine masts and brooms, rigging of silken cords, colored as it would be in the pro totype, and sails of satin. The sails carried the bill of far". On the flying jib was the words, "Compliments of ." On the foresail was the name of the jniest who sat before the little vessel, and on the mainsail weie- the names of the other guests. As the iruest had occasion to consult it, he used a little gold oar that rested on the lingers ol a siver naiad who peeped over the sparkling glass and held out both hands to rrasu the oar. The bills of fare cost 150 each. COMMERCE AND TRADE. PORT OF ASTORIA. READY FOR SEA. Jomo Troop. More people have read The Sox during ineycarjuai now passing man cer ueiorc since it was first printed. N'o other news- Caper published on this side of the earth has een bought and read In any year by .so manv men and women. We are credibly informed that people buy. read, ana itKe tiik sux lor tno loiiowmg reasons, among others : Because its news columns present in at tractive form and with the greatest passible accuracy whatever has interest for human kind ; the events, the deeds, and misdeeds, the wisdom, the philosophy, tho notable fol ly, the solid sense, the Improving nonsense all the news of the busiest world at present revolving in space. Because people have learned that in Its re marks concerning persons and affairs Tiif. Sux makes a practice of telling them the exact truth to the best of its ability three hundred and sixty-five days in the year, be fore election as well as sifter, about the whales as well as about the small fish, in the face of dissent as plainly and fearlessly as when supported by general approval. Xiik Sux has absolutely no purposes to serve, save the information of iis readers and the furtherance of the common good. Because it is everybody's newspaper. No man is so humble that Thk sux is indiffer ent to Itis welfare and his rights. No man Ls so rich that il can allow injustice to be done him. No man, no association of men, is powerful enough to be exempt fron the strict application of its principles of right .ami wrong. Because In politics it has fought for a doz en vcars. without intermission and some times aliist alone among newspapers, the fight that nas resulted in the recent over whelming popular verdict against Robeson Ism and for honest government. No matter what party is in power. Tiik Suxstandsand will continue to stand like a rock for the In terests of the people against the ambition of bosses, the encroachments of monopolists, and the dishonest schemes of pnblicrobbers. All this is what wc are told almost daily by our friends. One man holds that Tiik Sux Is the best religious newspaper ever published, because Its Christianity Ls undi luted Willi cant Another holds that it is the best Republican newspaper printed, be cause it has already whipped half the rascals out of that party, and Ls proceeding against the other half with undiminished vigor, A third believes it to be the best magazine of general literature in existence, because its readers miss nothing worthy of notice that Is current in the world of thought So every .-riend of The Sux discovers one of its many sides that appeals with particular force to ais individual liking.
