Tragic Death of a Miner's "Wife
At Scranton. recently, the wife,
of a miner named James Ruddy
loSt her life in a fire, and two of
Ruddy's children were so fearfully
burned that they cannot recover.
The Ruddy family were startled
from sleep at two o'clock in the
morning to find the frame house
in which thev lived in flames
Ruddy, who was crippled by a
recent mine accident, caught up
the youngest child and with great
difficulty struggled from the build
ing, while the wife devoted her
energies to rescuing the other five
children. She carried them out
one by one to the sidewalk. The
last boy and girl were terribly
scorched about the head and face,
and their night clothing was on
fire. Mrs. Ruddy, as soon as she
had the children out, rushed into
the burning house and up stairs
for her husband's savings, amount-,
ing to 2G0 in go'.d, but she had
no sooner entered than the flames
broke out at all points, and the
house lell in with a crash, envelop
ing her in a sheet of fire. The
spectators were powerless to
render assistance, and the poor
woman perished in sight of her
husband and children. She was
only twenty-six years old. Her
charred remains were not dis
covered until this afternoon.
Most of the money after which
she went was found uninjutcd.
A contemporary says: "In 1S1G
one bushel of corn would buy one
pound of nails. In 1SS2 one
bushel of corn would biry fifteen
pounds of nails. In 3S1G it took
from twenty to eight- dozens of
eggs to buy one bushel of salt.
In 1SS2 one dozen of egg s would
do the same thing. In 1S1G it re
quired sixty four bushels of barley
to buy one yard of broadcloth.
In 18S2 five bushels of barley
would do the business. In 1S1G
it required one bushel of wheat to
purchase one yard of calico. In
iSS'Jone bushel of wheat would
buy twenty-five -ards of a better
article.

We are i-rcdibly informed that people buy,
read, and like Tin: Six for the following
reasons, among others :
15ecau.se its news columns proent in at
tractive form and with the greatest possible
accuracy whatever has interest for human
kind ; the events, the deeds, and misdeeds,
the wisdom, the philosophy, tlio notable fol
ly, the solid sense, the Improving nonsense
all the news of the busiest world at present
revolving in space.
Because people have learned that in its re
marks concerning persons and atlairs Tiik
St"X makes a practice of telling them the
exact truth to the best of its ability three
hundred and sixty-five days in the year, be
fore election as well as after, about the
whales as well as about the small fish, in the
face of dissent as plainly and fearlessiv as
when supported by general approval. Tiik
Sux has absolute! no purposes to serve,
save the information of its readers and the
furtherance of the common good.
Because it Is everybody's newsnaner. No
man Is so humble that Tiik Sux is indillcr
cut to his welfare and his rights. No man is
so rich that it can allow Injustice to be done
him. No man. no association or men, is
powerful euoutih to be exempt fron the strict
application of its principles or right and
w rong.
Because in politics it has fought for a doz
en years, without intermission and some
times alia )stalone among newspapers, the
fight that nas resulted in the recent over
whelminz popular verdict airainst Robeson-
Ism and for honest government. No matter
wnat party is 111 power, tiik sux stands and
will continue to stand like a rock for the in
terests of the people against the ambition of
bosses, the encroachments of monopolists,
and the dishonest schemes of public robbers.
All this is what we are told ahhost dailv
by our friends. One man holds that Tiik
Sux Is the best religious newspaper ever
puuiisncu, occausc its (Jhristianitv is undi
luted with cant. Another holds "that it is
the nest Republican newspaper printed, be
cause it has already whipped half the rascals
oui 01 mat party, ami is procceiiing against
the other half with undiminished vigor, A
third believes it to be the best magazine of
general literature in existence, because its
readers miss nothing worthy of notice that
:s current in the world of thought. So everv
,'riend of Tiik Sux discovers one of its manv
sides that appoals with particular force to
jis Individual liking.
H you already know Tiik Sux, vou will
observe that In 1SS3 it is a little better than
ever before. H you do not already know
The Sux, you will find it to be" a mir
ror of all human activit y, a storehouse of the
choicest products of common sense and im
agination, a mainstay for the cause of hon
est government, a sentinel for genuine .letT
ersoulan Democracy, a scourge for wicked
ness of every species, and an uncommonly
good Investment for the coming j ear.
