A Commendable Enterprise.
Nothing so binds communities
together as easy and rapid means
of communication. Nothing helps
to build a country up and give it
the requisite population so quickly
as lines of travel by land and
water, that penetrate into isolated
regions and bring the inhabitants
a market for their produce. To
the northof us lies a vast and fer
tile region, of great natural wealth
and almost unlimited resource.
We refer to Pacific, Chehalis and
Wahkiakum counties. By the en
terprise of certain residents of
Astoria and Pacific countv a reru
lar line of travel has been estab
lished between this city and the
head-waters of the Chehalis, and
now from the Seattle Tosl-lntel-Ugcnccr
we learn that it is the in
tention of the Port Blakely Mill
company to build a railroad from
the Sound to the Chehalis. The
company own a large quantity of
timber in that direction 22,0001
acres in one body, and it is said its
object in building the road, will be
to make their timber available, and
incidentally to develop the coun
try and share in the benefits of the
immense transportations certain to
arise. The company has de
finitely concluded many of its
plans, and has determined to
built from Skookum Bay to the
Chehalis river, near Elma. The
distance is about eighteen miles.
The grades will In; comparatively
light, the worst being 110 feet to
the mile, for a short distance. The
right of way is already secured.
Xot only will the road be equip
ped for log hauling ii the best
known style, but it vill also be
equipped for the freight and pas
senger traliic: the whole cost
being about 100,000.
This affords grand opportunit
to that vast empire comprised in
western asningion. an a
line of boats from Astoria to
Shoal water bay,Gray?s Ilai bor, and
points on the Chehalis river to
Montesano and Elma, and a rail
road running to the Sound to con
nect therewith, that country will
receive an impetus that will put it
forward half a century in advance
of its present status.
The consular service for the
last year netted the government a
profit ot 51,000, the expenditures
having been $S3S,0G0 and the re
ceipts $SS9,000. This is. of course.
a tax on shipping equal the total of
recipts. Like the burdens im
posed on inventive genius through
the heavy lees of the patent
bureau, it is often too very serious
objection. The British govern
ment lays no burden on the com
merce of Great Britain for sup
port of the consular system, pay
ing the entire cost of it out of the
general fund. It appears to be
the policy of our government to
keep our foreign trade and our
ocean carrying trade down to their
present rather contemptible limits.
There are but two colored men
elected to the next congress, and
it is interesting to know that the
name of one is Mr. O'Hara, of
North Carolina, and of tiio other,
Mr. Lynch, of Mississippi. This
fact may or ma' not be s3'mbolic
of the final settlement of the color
question in America. A century
hence there may be no black race
in this country, while the whole or
a large section of the population
may be a little "off color."
The old reliable "Wells, Fargo
express company do not intend to
give up their business on this
northwest coast without a tussle.
They have commenced proceed
ings in the U. S. circuit court,
praying that the O. R. & N. Co.,
and N. P. R. R. Co, lie restrained
from interference with their estab
lished business.
Tin: late Thurlow "Weed was
the originator of two sayings that
are hkcly to be permanently re
tained in our political parlance
"a good enough Morgan until after
election," and the use of ' roor
back'' in place of the French
"canard."
By a majority of two the Port
land board of trade has very
properly declared in favor of abro
gating the Hawaiian treaty, which
permits Spreckles to cinch the
ag&r consumers of this coast.
A Washington- despatch says:
It is quite probable a couple of
new states may be admitted, and
perhaps three. Washington, Da
kota and New Mexico, will make
very vigorous efforts for admis
sion. Already:orablo reports
have been made upon Washing
ton and Dakota. Their admission
would give the Republicans in
creased strength in the senate
where the majority is so small as
to be quite a serious matter. Rep
resentative men from New Mexico
are also here, urging the admission
of that territory, but as its politics
are a little uncertain, it will not
probably be successful in its ef
forts. BAZAAR AND FAIR.
