TUESDAY DECEMBER 12, 18K2

Cleveland on Politics.
In a recent New York sperch,
Grover Clerelandj the newly-elected
governor of that state, said:
"I am quite certain that the late
demonstration did not spring from
any pre-existing love for the party
that was cailed to power, nor did
the people place the affairs of state
in our hands to be by them forgot
ten. They voted for themselves
and in their own interest. If yre
retain their confidence we must
deserve it, and we may be sure
that they will call on us to give an
account of our stewardship. AVe
shall utterly fail to read aright the
signs of the times if we are not
fully convinced that parties are
but instruments through which
the people work their will, and
that people desert or destroy
them. The vanquished have lately
learned these things, and .the vic
tors will act wisely if they profit
bv the lesson. Lot us not fomet
that the intelligent, thinking and
reading people will look to the
party which the' put in power to
supply all their various needs and
wants, and the party which keeps
pace with the developments and
progress of the times, "which
keeps in sight its landmarks, and
yet observes those things which are
in advance, and which will con
tinue true to the people as
well as to its traditions, will be the
dominant party of the future.5
Tun World's cable from London
says Mr. Gladstone's probable re
t:rment from thp chancellorship
of the exchequer and then fiom
public life with tin consequent
reorganization of the ministry is
now being much discussed in
London papers. The premier's
nearest friends are in doubt- what
his intentions really an. He
would like to resign while himsejf
and his fparty are at the zenith
of strength and popularity, and
3et he wishes to retain the power
which he has always found such a
fascination -in wielding. The
Times puts forth a feeler for the

A Washington despatch says
Ben Butler is not giving Demo
crats much comfoit. The other
day he was in a street car and
Mrs. Blaine was there, too. They
engaged in conversation. She
congratulated him upon his elec
tion as governor of Massachusetts.
"res," replied Butler, "the Re
publican governor of Massachu
setts." LTe then went on to explain, in
answer to her look of surprise,
that he did not credit his election
to the Democrats. He was elected
because the people of the state
were dissatisfied with the. Republi
can party management. He
was the people's governor, and
should not forget the fact that a
majority of the people in Massa
chusetts were Republicans.
In this county the post-.office oi
Mishawaka, has been established,
with Mrs. M". J. Kimberlin as post
mistress. A post-oflice has also
been established at Riverside,

master. Captax MritKY, of San Fran
cisco, is in "Washington working
to secure the immediate consid
eration of the Nicaragua canal
bill.
