We, the pilots of the "Cousins" are greatly astonished at Capt. J. H. D. Gray signing his name to the "open letter" published in Tiif. Astoiuix, Dec. 9, 1882. Ho could not avoid knowing that the schooner was disabled when coming in last trip, and materials could not be had, neither here nor at Portland, to repair the damage and put the vessel in a seaworthy condition, and we had to send to San Francisco to procure them. As soon as repairs have been done, which shall be done with the utmost despatch, the public, we hope, have will no cause for complaint. t Gko. W. Wood, H. A. Mathewv,, II. L. Hansen-, Jas. E. Camfisell. Gray's River Communication. The settlers on Gray's river, realiz ing the necessity of more speedy trans portation, are going to have a little steamboat that will enable them to get over here, transact their business, and get back the same daT. A cdiii pany is now being organized and the matter will be put in practical shape as soon as possible. It is a good idea. One great drawback to the settlement of this country is the lack of commu nication; a man living out of the way of lines of travel, is isolated, and it is only by such efforts as our enterpris ing neighbors aro now making, that affairs can bo improved. The Upper Town School. UprEr. Astoku, Dec. 0, 1882. En. Astehiax: A word about our public schools. I believe no one will deny that that the perpetuity of onr republican government and the free institutions of our country aro based upon knowl edge and virtue combined; without which, popular government cannot long stand, nor free institutions be maintained. Therefore, to carry out this principle, our common school system was adopted, and if faithfully maintained and efficiently carried out will greatly conduce to the perma nence of our cherished institutions, and the freedom and happiness of our people. The beauty of this system is: it takes hold of the infants of our land and brings them under early cultiva tion; just as tho farmer cultivates his crops; beginning as soon as the tender plant appears, weeding out the nox ious plants and bringing around the roots of the cultivated one the rich earth to nourish and strengthen it. This is the business of tho teachers of our land; and let mo say here, that the teachers of our children are among tho most deserving benefac tors of our land and are not properly appreciated nor compensated. These thoughts were brought to my mind the other day, during a visit to our district school. It has been the good fortune of the directors of our district to employ an efficient and competent teacher for tho present season, intho person of Miss Allen, and, according to my judgment, it is a model school, both in discipline and progress. The only difficulty is, there is too great a number of schol ars for one teacher, but as there is but one room, Miss Allen prefers doing all tho teaching herself rather than have an assistant in tho same room to divert the attention of the school from her explanations and illustra tions; and I think her judgment in tho matter is correct. Just think, Mr. Editor, what an interesting picture to see eighty pair of bright eyes, beaming with expectancy, with a twinkle of mischief peeping from one comer, (and who can blamo them, for the' must overflow with life some times,) and as many cars open for in struction from their lespected teacher. That, truly, is a field ready for culti vation and for the receiving of the good seed. Miss A. has a good fat uity of holding tho atten'ion of her scholars and, although seventy-five per cent of the number are between the ages of five and ten. yet all eyes are upon the teacher and every mo tion of hand or finger is observed and understood. We greatly need, and must soon have, another apartment for this school, for the scholars of the district are rapidly increasing. And now let me say that the ministers of the Gospel occupy the highest position bestowed on man by the Creator, and next to him stands the instructors of our children. May the Lord bless them and give them wisdom. T. P. P. An invaluable strengthener for the nerves, muscles, and digestive organs, producing strength and appetite, is Brown's Iron Bitters. LartlCH!
