Tub -Tact that our population
lias increased from 3.000,000 in 1790
too37000:000 in 1S82 is the basis
of a-good deal of comment, favor
able. and adverse. In the minds of
statisticians the fact excites enthu
siasm. In the minds of others
whose mental horizon is presum
ably wider, the aggregation of I
such large figures occasions alarm.
Among the latter is Richard Proc
tor, who, in the December number
of the North American Review,
does not share this enthusiasm in
regard to the desirability of growth,
merely by numbers. He believes
that the kind rather than the num
ber, the quality rather than the
quantity, is the great thing after
all. At the present rate of in
crease in this country the present
""population of the United States
would in 517 years cover the whole
of North America so thicklv that
four men would have to stai.d on
each square rod of surface. In 100
tyears more they would cover an
.area larger than the present land
'surface of the United States, and
4 in G40 vcara the whole surface of
the globe would be covered with
four men to the square yard. Even
at the present rale nf increase of
the European population it would
require only 1,1SS years, or a pe
riod of time equivalent to that be
tween the conquest of rahomet,
or the Anglo-Saxons in England
and the present era to accom
plish the same result. In a much
shorter time than this, of course,
the world would become uninhab-.
itable.
It follows, therefoie. if Mr. Proc
tor's logic be correct, the niorerap
idlv a nation orcountrv is "rov.inp;
in numbers, the mere speedily it is
approaching that point wlu-re
population -will begin to pi ess upon
the means of subsistence, growth
and development be anested, de
cay set in and followed perhaps by
the death of the nation and the
extinction of its civilization, bo
Hthat as much as"we regard cheap-
ijess, lOua abuniuaiiceoffood. iTnd
land, as nationalv-blcssingsfyet'
.
thev contam'iufto the seeds -of na;
t tional dissolution. Thp time 11
- coiC, under these conditions, when
'. 'the means of subsistence will no
longer be m excess of the wants
of the people, the increase of the
population will cease, the struggle
for life become hard, and the na
tion's growth receive a permanent
ctmck.
This fate would have overtaken
Europe before this, but for the
safety valve of that emigration to
r i ' i i
America wmen we welcome so
heartily. What outlet this conn
try will have when it arrives at
the same stage in its career, is not
yet apparent. At this stage the
Chinese empire arrived centuries
ago. India itself has also arrived
there, and little or no progress is,
or for centuries has been, possible
in those countries. Their people
have been forced, as the masses of
Europe are now beinir forced, o
change from an animal or mixed
diet to an almost purely vegetable
diet. And if, as physiologists hold,
cheap food in this sense makes
cheap men, cheapens lives and
makes them only so much raw
material for capitalists and em
ployers, the prospect of over
crowded masses subsisting on
plentiful, but unnutritious food is
not a pleasing one. "Those who
consider the dignity of man :is well
as his mere numbers on the globe,"
says Mr. Proctor, "those who study
the evidence afforded by the wide,
though unconscious, experiments
made by nations in past ages will
entertain a different idea as to the
way in "which the great life prob
lem should be viewed. Mere in
crease of population even though
all be supported in health and
vigor is not all that the human
race has to look forward to. It
may be doubted whether it is
worth hoping for in itself, under
any conditions; but, assuredly, if
along "with such increase theie
should come, as of old, the degra
dation of the many under the
tyranny and opprdKion of the few,
the change which enthusiasts re
gard so hopefully is one of the
most devoutly to be deprecated."
A fifteen million dollar fire in
London last Friday" burned an
area of two acres in the heart of
tbe city before being checked.
Ix an exchange giving an ac
count of the source of the Missis
sippi, we find it stated that years'
ago it was discovered that ai
certain lake, which had long been
considered the head of the Mis
sissippi, had no claim to the
honor. The explorers found a
new and smaller lake from which
the great liver took its rise. A
discussion arose as to what name
would be appropriate for it. The
story is that it was decided in
this way: ''Let's make a new
name bv coinintr a word." said an
old vcyagcur. "Some of you
learned onestell me what is the
.L.atin lor true." " entas, an
swered a scholar. "Well, now,
what is the Latin for head?"'
"Caput.' "Now write the two
words together by syllables. The
scholar wrote on a fctrip of birch
bark. "Ycr-i-tas-ca-put." "Read
it out.' The five syllables weie
read. "Now drop the first and
syllables, and you'l! have a gin.ii
name for the lake.' And "Itasca'
it was.
