Popular river, Montana, was recently the scene of an exciting Indian contest, which is described in a letter to the New i'ork Sun. This was the great fight between the four young daughters of Pole cat, and a young buck who had assaulted one of their number. The scene is thus described by the correspendent: "The lines are broken and the tribe forms a huge ring, into which the savage who provoked the animosity of the Pole-cat family is summarily thrust. Ho looks sullen and dogged. He has a hard fight be fore him and he knows it, but he is a man of his hands, and he mejms to wear those girls out if it lies in muscle and prompt and effective work. He may strike them anywhere above the breast, and kill them if a blow in the neck will do it, but bullets and arrows are ready for him if he strikes foul. The girls, on the other hand, must take off his apron. If the' accomplish that, he is dis graced to the uttermost moment of his life, driven from his tribe, left to starve on the prarie, and all Indians cautioned against harbor ing, feeding or associating with him. The injured woman is al lowed to have such squaws as she may select to assist her. But if she chooses too many to effect her purpose it is a disgrace to her, and so she is careful to select only enough to make the battle nearly equal. The Pole-cat girls are the belles of the Yanktonais tribe. If a squaw can be pretty, these girls are beautiful, and by virtue of ,tkeir attractions and their father's fry-fe tmkmyns n-Jtqrges and -other mt-P -' '. g - - - i ' t ' j ifr UK MTMMMK'i JffcrHlMi lor that reason. iberaikf no belpnn P1'8111 undertaking; and fori imz reason, aiso, tneir savage sisters giggle and exchange whis pers as the four girls step into the ring and approach the waiting buck. All five are in full war paint. Down the hunter's cheek and along his neck are alternate stpijf awd-green and yellow stripes on a background of brilliant red, while his chest, sides and back are tricked out with rude pictures of guns, bows and horses. The girls have smeared their faces with a coating of red, over which lies another of green striped with yellow. Their hair is unfastened at the back, and the front locks are braided with otter fur. Each wears a skirt and ieggins, but their blankets are laid aside and their muscular brown arms are dis played. There are no prelimi naries. The erirls dash at their enemy and attempt to grasp him. If all hands manage to get hold of him half the battle is accomplished. But he meets them squarely and fairly, planting a cruel blow be tween the eyes of the girl he has injured, knowing that if she is finished he can compel her to call off the rest. She is the general of the attacking forces and the prime object of his attack. Over she goes like a pin-wheel, but she is up again her face streaming with blood and her eves swellinsr. The elder girl has contrived to secure a waist hold, and locked her hands behind his back. His fists fall upon her upturned face with fright ful force, but she keeps her hold. The other girls are pressing him hard from behind, but his elbows work like battering-rams, and one steps back with her hand pressed tightly to her breast, and a look of agony in her eyes. Now he whirls suddenly, planting ponder ous blows upon the face and head of the girl, who, on her knees, still clings to his waist with a death grip. He fairly raises her from the ground as he spins, but her hold never relaxes. His earlier victim again dashes at him aad is rewarded by a crashing stroke on the mouth. She rtfels, but recovers, and darts again, to receive his fist on her neck with a force that whirls her half a dozen piOM off and drops her like a iSgf Not a word is spoken. The aMdof bis fists and the heavy fcr tkwg of the contestants are the only sounds. The last rally of the prostrate girl has enabled the nearer party to catch the buck, and one has twined her arms around his neck, while the other hangs to his right wrist. Hib left hand is still free, and it fairly twinkles in the air as he batters the maiden at his waist. Her grasp is like iron, hut her head reels and sways as his heavy hand falls on it with a noise that leaches the farthest side of the irregular ring. Her eyes are closed, and her breath comes convulsively. Were the fourth girl there to grasp that arm, the fight would soon end. The girl behind is choking him, and he employs new tactics. Grasping the kneeling girl by the throat, he pounds the face of the one behind him with the back of his head. No vanity prompts her to let go. She tight ens her grip, and buries her face in the back of his neck. The fourth girl is up, staggering and dazed. Brushing the blood from her eyes, with an angry motion, she approaches him, crouching as she moves. If the blow he has in store for her reaches the mark he will have another chance, for the girl at his waist is growing faint, and he can easily dispose of the other two. She comes at him like a cougar. The blow is deliv eied full upon her breast, but she grasps his wrist, and writhes up his arm. Now he is beset with danger. The two on his arms and the one at his waist pull him for ward; the girl behind still strang ling him, throws her weight on his back. In vain he attempts to straighten. The kneeling girl bends in her desjpairing struggle, miimneraTrwiiif s of ins arousa. kb m utjfiW Pi Ir arms-as"-ih I - 3 X X. t rsETtf T fL i r.r?JS? ! - J ...-t f . .. a - ?:H ?' But that triumph was his defeat. With a crash he comes to the ground, three girls upon him. One plants herself on his face, and the other two kneel on his arms. There is a struggle, and then the 3'oungest rises, with a wild yell, waring the apron in her hand. Her yell is echoed b' a low moan, as the mother of the prostrate hunter staggers out of the circle; and by a grunt of satisfaction as Pole-cat recognizes the victory of his girls. To-morrow, somewhere up the river, that disgraced buck will be found with a bullet through his brain." Taking Her Own Part. Women have io long been accustomed to indignities from their lords and protectors (?) that it is a pleasure to find one occasionally who is capable of protecting herself. The New Times has upon its editorial staff the well-known stock reporter, Middy Morgan, a lady who is re garded as a better judge of the stock market than any male re porter in New York. An inso lent policeman, the other day, re ceived a valuable lesson at her hands. This fellow mistook her for a wanderer from the back woods as she was walking on a wharf near the Battery, and loudly advised her to "walk overboard." She quietly took his number, re ported hign at his station, identified him when he appeared at the end of his watch, and had him sus pended for two weeks without pay. The astonished rough tried to beg off, and his fellow officers shut him up with the remark, "Served ye right." A good old Quaker lady, after listening to the extravagant j'arn of a person as long as her patience would allow, said to him, "Friend, what a pity it is a sin to lie, when it seems so necessary to thy happiness." An old Sandy Hook, Pilot, Mr. Peter Bailey, residing on Court street, south Bipoklyn, N. Y., was cured of a very severe case of rheu matism by St. Jacobs Oil. His ail ment had resisted all professional treatment. The Central Pacific Survey. The survey corps of the Cen tral Pacific Railroad company, to whom we referred in our last, have reached the mouth of Sucker creek. They are provided with a fine out fit, and report that they have made very rapid progress in running the line. Their instructions are to run directly from the mouth of Sucker creek to Boise City. From Boise a line will be run southeast toward Wood river country. It is stated the merchants of San Francisco and the railroad officials have de termined that the interests of both demand the construction of a branch which will secure to San Francisco the continued trade of southern Idaho, the trausferof which to the east is threatened by the Ore gon Short Line. Since the settle ment of Idaho it has purchased from San Francisco over one hun dred million dollars' worth of ffoods, and now, when there is every prospect of largely increased demands, San Francisco and the Central Pacific road have shaken off their lethargy, and mean busi ness. Whether or not the con struction of the line from Winne- mucca to Boise City, and beyond, will be realized, is a question for consideration; bu as yet, there seems no reason to doubt the good faith of the projectors. The engi neers report the route, sis far as surveyed, perfectly feasible. Hose Statesman. Mr. Peet a rather" diffident man, was unable to prevent himself from bcin;r introduced one evening to a fascinating young lady, who, misunderstanding his name, con stantly addressed him as Mr. Peters, much to .that geutlemimV distress.1 tr;iu- tllmnh'u,; . 0VnU4 WMVW& -ooun . f-t - u CasliXullvTiuJ.Jetrn est! !t-t rA r tx . iJI 9- " ?oawdii Mr. Petwii? said the young blushincf, as ihe plavfullr witb- drew part way behind her fan. England possesses 44, 000,000,000 worth of property, and France 37,000,000,000. " This would make the United States worth $0,000,000,000 more than England. and 13,000,000,000 more than France.
