Hume is establishing a fruit cannery at West Berkeley, Cal. Could a regular supply of fruit be in sured here, there are splendid facili ties for that industry. This is a great season for skilled and unskilled labor of all kinds. Carpenters especially are in demand; .and anT one who can shove a plane or drive nuail straight can get 3.00 a day. The Eureka, which has been un dergoing repairs in San Francisco .ill summer and fall, leaves on her old route to-day. The Idaho, which has been taking her place, goes back to the Puget Sound route. An inoffensive printer, was ar rested in Portland last week, just be cause the fact of having long hair and a dab of ink on his brow made him resemble a bad man from tho mines for whom tho police were watching. Two gentlemen of leisure entered tho Boca bear hall at Seattle, last Saturday night, and relieved the pro prietor of $300, and his watch. Then they tied him, and liking not the inside locked the out. It is thought they nre bold men from Portland. The Marquis of Lome and Princess of Louise are to bo on next Saturday's steamer en route for San Francisco and home. They will not visit Portland. We have, as yet, no authentic information in reference to their intentions as regards Astoria. Mr. Studer, of New York, is kind enough to inform us that if we will send him $22.50 and insert a column advertisement for him he will send us a copy of a book he is going to print. Stude is evidently mixed up: ho mistakes us for Honry Villard in disguise. "What shall I say if they ask me if I think you are engaged?" was the rather impertinent question asked a young lady of this place a few even ings ago. "Tell them that yon think you don't know, and that you are quite sure it is nonoof your business," was the crusher the young man got in reap onse. The first time for many a day, the incoming steamer failed to come in yesterday. As a general thing tho ocean steamers arrive and depart trom Astoria with as mucli regularity s so many ferry boats, but yesterday, oven though it was the State of Cali fornia, the weather was too thick for any vessel to cross the bar. A party consisting of sea captains and sojourners at Port Blakely chartered the steamer Blakely to. go to .Nesqnally duck shooting, on Friday. About 2 p. M., while preparing to re tnrn, Capt. Curtis, of the schooner W. D. Beebe, was aiking a gun from a skiff, tho hammer caught on the bottom of tho boat and the gun was discharged, the whole charge of shot storing his breast at the nipple, iMtaBtly killing him. Deceased was fed about 38 years. He leaves a wif aad family nSan Francisco. Mm fM well known on the Sound and jcted. The body will be aud taken to San Francitco. Seattle on Deck. The inhabitants of ''The Queen City of the Sound," aro of the opin ion that they ought to begin building a railroad. At -a late meeting of the chamber of commerce of that city, among other speeches, Judge Lewis said: "I went to Iowa in 1854. On one occasion I started on a journey. Before g.'ing to bed I paid my fare over the road, and left orders to ba called in time for the coach. By somo oversight I did not waive up until eight o'clock, and fouud out that I was left and had to walk twenty-four miles to my destination. Now fel low citizens and members of the chamber of commerce, I've just found out, within the past ten days, that we, as a community, aie left, and we have paid our fare, too. I don't believe the peopl j realize what is going on. I went to Tacoma the other day and siw immense coal bunkers being built there. 1 sup posed, of course, they wero for the Central Pacific Railroad company, which owns a coal mine up the Puy allup, but on inquiry I found they wero being "built by the Oregon Im provement company for the purpose of handling our Green Rivor coal by way of Tacoma. When 1 came home 1 took a map and looked into this thing, and I found that we had been buying and pa3'ing for tho right of way for the main line of the Northern Pacific railroad, and had sent commis sioners clear up into Pierce county, to secure n right of way for a hostile coqjoration. 1 learned that no less than 300,000 have been expended by tho N.P.R.R. Co. during the past year in trying to find a practical pass down tho Green river to Tacoma, and that not less than eleven surveys havo been made, and still they havo failed to find as good a route as exists by way of Cedar river. I asked a promi nent man in the company why they did not accept the Cedar river route, knowing it to be the most practicable, and ho replied: 'Mr. PreEcott says the route.comes too near Seattle.' The Northern Pacific company will, as they can find a practicable route, build a line up so as to carry tho Green river coal to Tacoma. Mr. Yillard put his hands in the pockets of the people of Portland, and toel: out six millions of dollars, but in return for that ho has increased tho value of their property twenty-five million dol lars, so that they wero gainers, rather than losers, by the operation. Let us raise the necessary 200,000 within tho next ten days, and commence throning dirt by the first .f Janu ary." Cape Hancock Record. KiATE HANCOCK, JJec. 4, A. M. Mention was made in this journal of the difficulty experienced by the master of the ship Lucy A. Nickels in getting out of port with his crew Monday. Just before the vessel got under way the crew refused to do duty, but the energetic captain ob tained the help of a gang of men from shore, subdued the mutineers, Iiove up the anchor, and strted on the voyr-e to Cork. A mr.ster ::t?eds :i good deri of pluck to start. on so long a voyage with twenty-five or thirty mutinous men, who show their ugly disposition toward him before they get out of port. It is probable that when they are fairly at sea, and the whisky is thoroughly out of them, they will behave better; but any ex cept a determined commander would have waited to make sure before he sailed. This little incident, occurring at a time when there is so much talk about the revival of American ship ping, naturally serves as a reminder of how much of the past success of our merchant marine is accounted for by the character of our ship captains, and how much of any future glories it may win will be due to the same cause. Tho necessities of sea-faring life develop a peculiarly energetic and self-reliant class of men, and it has been the boast of this country that American master mariners were superior in intelligence and other essential qualities than any other nation. Some of the obstacles now often mentioned as hampering tho successful competition of American vessels with those of other nations such as higher pay and better food of seamen than on foreign ships are such as havo always had to be con tended with, and in times past it was done successfully. American ships have generally sailed shorthanded, as compared with French, Italian, Portu guese or even English ships, and the Americiti sailer is expected to do more work than any other. It was only by this extra efiicioney of masters and men that American merchant ships or whaling ships were ablo to compete, with the odds in other things so much against them. It is possible that American ships will never again sail with such a class of seamen its used to go out from New Bedford, New London and other ports, on the whalers young, bravo, ambitious, and stimulated to additional exertions by working on a "lay" of the profits instead of for a"cs. Seamen are now a motley crowd of mingled nationalities, but it is a fortunate thing that the breed of American master mariners is not extinct. A few months ago one of them who fouud his ship delayed at this port for lack of one man to complcto the crew, gave evidence of his grit by placing his brother m command and himself shipping as a common seaman. Ameri can shipping will revive some day if that kind of men continue to com mand it. S. F. Alta. ItWAME SOL'.Vn A.W WELL." HATCHER'S ST.IT10X. Git.. March ST, ISTiJ. R. V. Pikuck, M.
