ASTORIA. OREGON
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30, 1S52

KoTcmbcr SOtli.
Ox to-day, one of our too few
American holidays, the citizen
takes a rest, goes to church, eats as
good a dinner as it is possible to
procure and spends the remainder
of the day as best suits his indi
vidual fancy. Apart from the re
ligious aspect of the matter this
thing of having' an annual Thanks
giving day is a good idea. The fact
of observing the dp.3' as a holiday
implies that ve have something to
give thanks for; and who among
us is so Godforsaken that in the
retrospect of the year now draw
thing to he thankful fer: of mis
fortune avoided, trouble averted,
ing to a close he can not findsome
or disaster overcome? Then there
arc the thousand little blessinjrs
that drop into our daily lives as1, -
unnoticed as the rain that falls to
earth as we write. There is a ten
der chord of fine feeling that vi
brates in the heart of the thankful
man as he thinks of so many no
more worth- than he who have
less reason to be thankful than he,
and though it be unworthy thanks
to contrast one's individual condi
tion with that of those who have
strayed on forbidden or forgotten
paths, yet if it lead him to go fur
ther in thought and thank the giver
of all good for His loving kindness,
the sentiment is a beneficial one.
To us of Astoria, the season is i
one of fitting thanks

Truth to the earth in order to give
her occasion to rise again. Truth
cannot be crushed to the earth in
any but immature or ignorant or
depraved minds, and there she is
not always, nor often, able to rise
again and lift them with her. If
she does, it is a painful process,
and thev'rfC "vtih hruises and
stairs "that only can be wholly
healed and purified by the perfect
sanctificatton after this life. If
you crush truth to the earth, yon
crush human hearts and hopes and
souls with her. She is proof against
destruction, but they are not. The
truth itself needs no defense, be
cause it is immortal and impecca
ble; but the possession of the
truth by men and women does,
because they "arc not. A lie is a
positive and an energetic force for
mischief. It carries blight and
want and woe with it wherever it
goei and the only defense against
it is a mind armored and garri
soned, with truth.
The largest telescope in the
world will soon be completed for the
Russian Government bv the firm
of Alvan Clark & Sons, of Cam
bridge. This largest of all glassos
is for the Russian Observatory at
Polkovo, which was founded in 1839
by the Czar Nicholas. In 1878 the
Government authorized the as
tronomer Otto Struvc to draw on
the Treasury for whatever sum
might be required. The grinding
of the new lens has now been pro
ceeding for twelve months and it
is expected that it will saon be
completed. The length of the Pol
kovo telescope will be forty-five
feet and the diameter of the object
glass thirty inches. It will be
mounted on a lawn to the south
west of the principal building of
the Observatory. It is estimated
that this new lens will practically
bring the moon within a distance
of thirty-eight leagues from the
earth.
GenvSiiermax, in his report for
the past year, says that the fear of
exceeding the limit of 25,000 men
w the army, or the difficulty of en
fating rteQ-iu these prosperous
has -kept the ary below
or tWaiiiiiiir o
the country demands, and he ad
vises the change of the limit to
30,000. The troops during the
transition period on the frontier,
he says, have lived in holes in the
ground, in bourses made of green
cottonwcod logs, infested b ver
min, in temporary shanties, gener
ally without a murmur; but now
this battlo with poverty is ovp.r, or j
nearly so, and he appeals to con
gress to confer on the president,
the secretary of war, or on a board
of general officers, the power to
designate the places of strategic
importance at which to erect suit?
able permanent buildings forprop
erly quartering the troops.
