THE JNORTHERW PACIFIC
The following regarding tho
building of the Northern Pacific
Railroad is valuable for future
reference :
The eastern extension of the
Northern Pacific is at its junction
with the Chicago, St. Paul Minne
apolis and Omaha Railroad, two
miles east of Superior, "Wisconsin.
Twenty-five miles west it crosses
the Saint Paul and Duluth at the
Northern Pacific junction, twenty
lour miles from Duluth and one
hundred and thirty-six from Saint
Paul. From the Northern Pacific
junction to Duluth one-half inter
est in the St. Paul and Duluth
Railroad is the property of the
Northern Pacific. One hundred
and fifteen miles west, at Brainerd,
is the junction with" the "Western
Railroad, leased and controlled by
the Northern Pacific, a distance of
sixty and and a half miles, to Sauk
Rapids, where running connections
are made with the St. Paul, Min
neapolis and Manitoba Railroad,
for a distance of seventy-five and
a half miles, into St. Paul and
Minneapolis. At Little Falls, 31
miles from Brainerd, the Little
Falls and Dakota Railroad leaves
the Western Railroad in a south
westerly direction for the Sauk
Centre and Morns and beyond, GO
miles of track being laid, and the
eighty-seven miles to Morris to be
completed during 1882. This line
is projected to Ortonville, Minne
sota, and Brule City, Dakota, a
distance of three hundred miles
from Little Falls, by the Northern
Pacific Company.
At Wadena, one hundred and
sixty-two miles, the Northern
Pacific, Fergus and Black Hills
leaves the main line, and is con-
avrncTect througn rergus mns,w
miles, and to Breckenridge, 75
miles, and is projected to the mouth
of Owl River (Missouri River), and
to the Black Hills, a total distance
of 450 miles. At Fergus Falls
there is a branch constructed to
Pelican Rapids, 23 miles. This is
under the control of the Northern
Pacific Company.
At Gtydon, 243 miles, the Saint
Paul, .Minneapolis and Manitoba
Railroad is crossed, connecting the
Northern Pacific with the Canadian
Pacific at Winnipeg, and again at
Mborhead, 253 miles.
At Fargo, 2G3J miles, the Fargo
and Southwestern has track laid to
Davenport, 18 miles, at the cross
ing of the Breckenridge branch of
the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Man
itoba Railroad. The grading is
completed to Lisbon, 50 miles, and
will be extended to that point dur
ing 1SS2, and grading to the cross
ing of James River, SO miles, is
under the control of the Northern
Pacific.
At Casselton, 273 miles, the
Casselton branch is completed
north to Mayville, 43 miles, with
grading extended some distance
beyond. It is under the control
of the Northern Pacific.
At Jamestown, 347 miles, the
Jamestown and Northern is pro
jected north, with ten miles of
track laid, and 40 miles graded,
and is under control of the North
ern Pacific Company.
The Missouri river is crossed at
Bismarck, 450 miles. The Yellow
stone Valley is entered at Glen
dive, G70 miles, and followed to
Livingstone at 1,010 miles, where
a branch is projected to the Nation
al Park, 57 miles. At Billings, 895
miles, a branch is projected to St.
Benton, 180 miles. The Belt
Mountains are crossed at Bozeman
Pass, 1,124 miles, 3,650 feet tunnel.
The route is thence, via Bozeman,
1,035 miles; Helena, 1,134 miles;
Mullan Pass, at the crossing of
the main Rocky Mountains, 1,153
miles, 3,820 feet of tunnel, and
a summit grade of 5,548 feet
above mean low tide; thence down
the Blackfoot, Hell Gate and Mis
soula rivers to Missoula, 1,257
raile. Leaving the Missoula river
atl, 2G5 miles, It ascends the Cor
MMn Defile and over the summit
t Camas Prairie, descends the val
fejr of Finlay creek, Jocko river,
rUthead rtrr, and Clark's Fork
f Ifct Ooksibta, ad arovodtbe
i of Ike Find dTOwtfk
to Sand Point, 1,454 miles, at the
foot of the lake. From the valley
of the Columbia the route crosses
the great plains of the Columbia
at Spokane Falls, 1,522 miles, to
Ainsworth, at the mouth of Snake
river, on the Columbia, 1,G?2 miles,
and down the river to Wallula,
1,G84 miles, where it connects with
the Oregon Railway and Naviga
tion Company's railroad to Port
land, 1,897 miles; thence to Kal
ama, 1,937 miles, and to Tacoma,
2,042 miles.
A Relic of Sherman's March.
As we tramped along through
'woods of ash, elm and water oak,
we saw wild ipecac and sweet-
william jrrowinjr at the sides of
the odd pathway, and having
asked the name of a curious kind
of grass, I was delighted at the
stories that then came out. "That,"
said" the guide, in answer to the
question, "is what we call Egyp
tian clover. We didn't have it
before the war, and none of us
ever heard of it or saw it until
Sherman and Johnston came. The
seed was left on the ground by
the armies, and now we wouldn't
take anything for it." The grass
which has a tiny leaf more like
that of the red clover, grows all
over the hill-sides, at the edge of
the woods, along the earthworks,
and even iorces its way into the
tilled fields. In its growth it
chokes out other herd grass and
all weeds, though fortunately it
may be killed itself by plowing,
or there might be too much of the
good thing. Horses and cattle get
fat upon it, so that on the battle
field there is pasturage in where
before the fight nothing of value
grew. This, truly,, was aa did
rci ei:mun That"'" iWU'BprjUBinjr;
hosts, halting here, like beasts of
the jungle, to snap up trees, to
tear the ground, to burn Jind to
slay, should leave behind not bones
to bleach only, but seed wherefrom
have sprung dainty carpets and
soft borders of green that enrich the
waste paces.-Iihiladelphia Times.
The Effects of Tobacco.
"A tall young woman," with a
new grievance against cigarettes,
writes to the Sanitaiy Engineer,
asking if excessive smoking of
them is not ono of the reasons why
young men are. so short. "It is
forlorn," she says, "to walk or
dance with a young man that only
comes up to your shoulder, and
there are so many of them' whom
she knows. She evidently does
not like to "overlook" such an
offense as this. On the other hand,
a clerk in tho New York Dock
Department, who is charged with
disgbeying a rule of the office and
smoking during office hours, says
ho has smoked since he was seven
teen years old (he is now 50), and
smoking has had no evil effect on
him. On the contrary, he has al
ways "taken a delight in stud',"
and while thoughtless young men
have sought amusement in "thea
ters, ball-rooms, drinking-saloons,"
he has been trying to improve
himself in the line of his "legiti
mate profession" and to store his
"mind -with knowledge upon gen
eral subjects." Besides he has
added twenty years to his life in
"hours stolen from sleep," so that
he is now, in effect, 70 years old.
All this all this he attributes to
the patient and conscientious use
of tobacco.
There is one form of swind
ling carried on this country that
honest men can afford to contem
plate with satisfaction. It is what
is known as the "boodle" busi
ness. Sharpers send out pirculars
in tho form of letters by the thou
sands, addressed to young men in
all parts of the country, worded
in such a way as to suggest that
the sender has counterfeit money
for sale. Sometimes a fragment
of a genuine bill is enclosed as a
sample of their "goods." Tho vic
tim eagerly swallows the bait,
visits the city proposed, or sends'
a remittance. He rarely receives
the counterfeit money ho desires,
but h generally succeeds in losing
all few spare cash. The treasury
ejkiatf ttteV teat l,00,i0 or
more change hands in this way
every year. The beauty of the
trick is that it takes in none but
those who areaheady so dnpraved
as to be willing to engage in the
circulation of counterfeit money.
In this instance, therefore, the
sharper stands as a sort of financial
fool-killer, and that is the point
wherein the crime is entirely sat
isfactory. The Guardsmen returned from
Egypt who now walk the streets
of London have a wild look about
the eyes and a marked unquiet
about the brow. The traces of
severe privation is left in their
dried and shrunken forms, but the
traces of mental anguish is visible
enough in the disturbed glances
they cast around. The same ex
pression was noticeable in the
faces of the men returned from
Zululand, and the officers of our
army will tell you that the men
who have served in the frontier
war against the Indians never re
covered the happ-, careless look
they had worn at the commence
ment of the campaign. "One
single echo of the war whoop by
night will rob a man of twenty
3'ears of his life, and he may bid
farewell to his youth forever
after," said Gen. Custer just be
fore entering on his campaign on
the Rosebud river.
