O) xz Jhiilg sixrvlnn. ASTORIA. OREGON : SUDAY NOVEMBER 20, 1SJ-2 J. F. IIALLOKAN .:ntr B. F. Duller. Few public men have been more persistently abused than the individual whose name heads this article. No living American poli tician ha had a mere varied pub lic career. A man of superior literary attainments; of persuasive eloquence and keen acumen; a lawyer of exceeding ability and enormous business; a millionaire whose chief enjoyment is to take a party out in his yacht and stride the deck cigar in mouth while their souls sicken o'er the heading wave; one would think that he could crowd enough into life with out going into politics; but he says he "must have relaxation," and so for twenty-three years he has been a prominent figure in Eastern circles and the favorite butt for callow paragraphers. It was in 2 SCO, at the Baltimore convention that he first attracted attention by steadily voting through forly-two ballots for Jell Davis for the picsidential nomi nee. Then he was a Democrat. "When Sumter was fired on the lonowing spring nc uonneu a general's uniform and made a part of histor', the New Orleans triumph and the Fort Fisher disas ter being the most prominent inci dents in his military career. Since the close of the war, when not en gaged in putting up jobs togetthe Massachusetts gubernatorial nomi nation he has been doing a won derful amount of legal business. He daily disposes of three men's work. Tt is no uncommon thing for him to leave Boston on an early train, take notes and make up a written brief while on the car, stop off at New i'ork, argue a case before the court of appeals displaying a profound knowledge of what he is talking about and generally carrying conviction to the minds of his auditors; then on to Washington, arriving the next morning to argue a case involving millions before the Supreme Court of the United States; and return to Boston the following day to ex plain to the honorable court there assembled, some of the abstruse technicalities of the law. To a poor client he listens cour teously and accords all possible service gratuiteusly: to the repre sentative of a corporation a 5,C00 retainer fee is requisite to procure recognition. The docket fcr one month shows one hundred ami two cases wherein Ben Butler figuxes for either plaintiff or defendant, and 3'et to sec him in his yacht at sunset he seems the veriest idler that ever yawned through a tire some da. Tiikri: is not :i country on the, globe whose laws permit the masses to enjo' in any other than a re stricted sense, those inalienable rights of man, life, liberty ami the pursuit of happiness. The bull: of the world's population "en joys" life that is meie existence, liberty to toil for the enrichment of their masters,, and such happi ness as can be found in incessant drugery and hopeless poverty. n a world in -which all men are cre ated with equal rights, a world in which, by the law of God or nature, every mail has a light to himself, and to the products of his own labor, human S3'stems and laws give all that is bright and pleasant to the few, all that is dark and hard to the many. The high-toned scions of aris tocracy resident in Baltimore, whoso ancestors sold rum and bar tered tobacco and molasses, are organizing a "society" in which the members must individually have lineage as a warrant for admission. It is the first attempt for half a century to establish an American aristocracy, and will most probably be jeered out of existence like its predecessors. A census of China, in the sense we use the word, has never been taken. It has been generally credited that the population of the country numbers 400,000,000 souls. Recent opinions, however, given by well-informed writers, declare that the population of China proper is not to exceed 250,000,000. Ik the next Congress ol the United States there will be one hundred and eighty-five new raera- br. It will take the whole of the first session for that awkward squad to learn the parliamentary drill, and during that time forbear ance is the greatest kindness that can be shown fifty per cent, of our national legislators. The women of Massachusetts arc rejoicing over the following section of the Massachusetts Dem ocratic platfol m : "Equal rights, equal powers, equal burdens, equal privileges and equal protection by law under the Government for every citizen of the republicv without limitation o lace or sex or property qualifi cation, whether it be by a tax on property or a poll tax on persons." Good ghosts arc at present quo ted at 30 each in London. That isjwhat the "Society for Physical Research" is offering. The ghosts must be in good condition, and prompt payment is assured on delivery.
