Even yet some of the political
bosses in the east are growling
over the defection of former partv
organs and party orators, and say
that those who refused to be
whipped in to the traces are
"traitors," ''renegades,' etc. A
good many worthy people seem
inclined to agree with the discom
fited gentlemen in denouncing
such refusal on the part of men
who want to do their own think
ing. That such a view should be
taken of such a thing shows the
hold which machine politics have
taken upon the minds not merely
of machine politicians but of a
great many other people; for a
great many people who agree with
outspoken men, as indeed every
body must, are nevertheless horri
fied at such boldness in thus
"speaking out in meeting.1' The
phrase exactly fits the case.
Preachers are held to be prohibi
ted from alluding in the pulpit to
many matters of common notoriety
and from taking notice of what
people are doing or saying or
thinking out of doors; and it is
this convention which many peo
ple consider to be the explanation
of the ineffectual character of mod
ern preiching compared with the
preaching of two or three genera
tions ago. Politics seem to be ap
proaching the same condition when
an orator can produce all this flut
ter by saying what everybody
knows. As parties become moie
and more organizations of profes
sional politicians, that is to say
"machines," they become like
churches in this respect. The'
are made up, indeed, not of saints
but mainly of very hardened sin
ners; and their aims are distinctly
and exclusively of this world. But
then they are like churches in that
no public criticism of their meth
ods can be made without exposing
the critic to reproach. A member
must not say anything to brine:
scaudal on the "society," and the
.-.Editor action on the part of former foes
as now indicates fraternal feeling.

Now, nobody has called the New
York papers' editorials in the
recent compaigns dull reading;
and it is a great temptation to
political writers to discover that
they can be not 01 interesting
but exciting bj- the easy process
of mentioning "in meeting" som e
notorious truths. The elders are
of course immensely disgusted;
but the result of the late elections
must show even the elders that
the ecclesiastical method of
managing a party has its draw
backs, and is likely, if it goes on,
to reduce the party to an assem
blage composed exclusively of
elders, who unfortunately will not
be numerous enough to vote
themselves into all the offices
without lay assistance.
It is refreshing in these days
when the frantic wearers of the
bloody shirt are finding that once
