Tho first train from
Portland J
and Eastward to Montana left that
city at 4:4."i yesterday afternoon.
Salem has a sensation. Bad boys
spit on the windows, and the failure
of a jury to convict some of the offend
crs may lead to civil war.
The two young men
-Jarvis and
Parker, who started from Hennisa' j
place for jsaselle, about two weeks
age have been given np for lost.
Gustav Hansen has enlarged his
establishment, by the addition of an
other show window, a music room,
etc., and contemplates still further
improvement.
Mr. Tom Merry, whose brilliant
productions are the weekly delight of
thousands of readers, was in the city
yesterday, to meet his son on the in
coming steamer.
The Y. M. C. A. in San Fran
cisco are going to give a free dinner to i
five hundred boys on Thanksgiving
Day. The only conditions for admis
sion are that the boys shall have clean I
faces and their hair combed.
In his Thanksgiving proclamation
Governor Perkins, of California,
closes by saying "God save the com
monwealth of California.' The lie
publican papers publishing it put
underneath, "California solid Demo
cratic; amen."
Every one remembers tho "Uncle
Toms Cabin" troupe and the "real
bloodhounds' that were here last
summer. Tho ferocious brutes got
loose on a Davenport stage the other
day and killed the donkey and another
of the actors.
Turkeys have not as yet begun to
arrive. One week from Thursday there
will be several inquests held upon
bodies of those birds, tho result of
such post mortem examinations being
the dissection of said bodies, with the
customary verdicts.
The Andrews and Stockwell Pan
tomime troupe advertise their appear
ance next Monday and Tuesday.
They have drawn large audiences at
the Grand Opera House, San Fran
cisco, and are favorabby criticised by
the press of that cit'.
Mr. P. L. Cherry, of this city has
received tho British consular agency
for this city. In that capacity
ho represents the home government,
occupying the same position in Asto
ria that Mr. Laidl.iw does in Portland.
It is a responsible post and one that
has been well bestowed.
Since the elections on the 7th, all
sorts of celestial pranks have been ob
served. Last week thcic were spots
on tho sun, and brilliant auroral dis
plays, on Sunday night a lunar rain
bow was to be seen, and now. from
the southern country comes news of
an Earthquake. We are in the hands
of Providence
It is reported that Z. J. Hatch,
tho former proprietor of the steamer
Yaquina, contemplates tho building of
another vessel similar to the one ho
lately sold, to be used in the trado
between Yaquina bay and Portland.
Another vessel will be put on that
route, owned and run by a joint stock
company, next season.
Dorsey and Patterson, the al
leged highwaymen and murderers of
Banker Cunnings, in jail at Nevada
City, Cal., recently petitioned tho
judge of tho supreme Jcourt to have
the "Oregon boots" fifteen-pound
leg manacles removed from their
legs, but the judge has declined to
interfere, and tho sheriff who has the
custody of tho prisoners, refuses to
removo them. At night, to prevent
suffering from cold on account of the
irons, the prisoners take a heated
brick to bed with them.
There is considerable changing
around in tho Portland notvspaper
offices. Jerry Colwell whoso phantom
form erstwhile appeared at stated and
unstated hours in the Standard office,
has been added to tho Oregonion
force: J udgo Moreland has resigned
his position as editor on the Telegram,
so has F. III. Blake, fermerly reporter
for that paper; it is reported that air.
Holroan, and Mr. Lovinson, both
gentlemen of unusual journalistic
ability will resign their present
positions in the Oregonian oftlca
about New Years; Chas. Whitehead,
an experienced newspaper man will
be the city editor of tho now paper
Tho Northwest News.

Us?"
En. A&ToniAX:
There was much satisfaction felt
and exposed on reading Dr. Kinney's
article in The Astorian, mi the
bridge road to Clatsop plains. Half
the benefits of such a road cannot be
' told in a short article, but it is well
understood by the people generally.
Issuing bonds to build a road is right,
i too, for if the people paid all improve
ments as they were made, few would
t be made, and the next "feneration l
I would have what was made for noth
ing. It is all right to build for our
, children and pay as we go, but when
i the next generation will nrobablv be
fore:gne,Sj aml othing t "the
question has a different face. This
generation don't want to live without
any of the comforts of life because the
next generation, which will probably
be Chinamen, would be obliged to
help pay for some of the good things
they had left to them.
I move we put the question by J
somebody circulating the petition.
Hurry up, or tho next generation will
uave it to build as well as to pay for.
What a pleasant drive out from San
Francisco by the Cliff House, along
the beach and in by way of the Ocean
House! but then that macadamized
road cost nothing. Our ieach is
pleasant, too and profitable.

This morning appears an adver-1
tisement of Rev. David Wills' lecture
at the Presbytcnan church to-morrow
evening. His subject "The glory of
young men under sity' is a novel
one, and those who heard the reverend
gentleman last Sunday will need no
urging to hear him again to-morrow.
The proceeds of the lecture are to bo
applied to the furnishing of the
church.
To-night, at Liberty liall, will
be presented T. S. Arthur's temper
ance dram.i entitled "Ten Nights in a
Bar-room." The cast of characters
is made up of local talent; consider
able time and trouble has been be
stowed upon the rehcrsals, etc., and
the I. 0. G. T., under whose auspices
the entertainment is given, confident
ly expect to produce a result commen
surato with their ability.
In Russia a newspaper man can't
print an item till it has been oilieially
endorsed by the government censor.
Just fancy a local editor writing up an
account of a shanghaing affair, or tho
failure of a steamer to leave Astoria
freight; the boys all standing around
waiting for "copy," w hile tho unfor
tunate 1. e. had to skip around to tho
g. c. to have it marked "all right" be
fore putting it into type.
The triennial committee of the
Grand Commandery of California,
Knights Templar, is actively preparing
for the triennial conclave of the order
in the United States, which will bo
held in San Francisco next summer.
Circulars have been issued, and in
quiries have been made of the various
commanderies regarding the number
of Knights and ladies who may be ex
pected to visit this coast during July
and August. The fare to S. F. from
Kansas City or Omaha, and return,
has been set at the low rate of seventy
five dollars.
But little more was done on the
docks yesterday than was absolutely
necessary; the bad weather having a
depressing influence on all -out door
workers. The State camo in on time,
and two other steamers arrived in
from Hongkong, via Victoria, tho
Madras and the Volmer, with freight.
They went up stream with the
Argyllshire; the Glenshee cleared for
the Liffey with flour; the fleet that is
anchored in the bay ready to go out
received anotlier accession; the Miles
started for Shoalwater bay, but con
cluded to wait till to-day.
Prof. Thos. J. Bryant (formerly
of Indianapolis, Ind.,) who is presi

Double-Entry Book-Keeping," which
is a practical "key" to tho science. It
is the result of may years' experience
as accountant, counsellor and teacher,
and contains information of great
utility to every accountant, oiHcer at
torney, teacher and such others as
may havo occasion to test tho accu

business calculations. It will bo sent
to any address on receipt of 1, by T.
