OUR NORTHERNNEIGHBORS.
Chehalis county is situated in
the extreme western portion of
the territory, its shores being
washed by the waters of the Pa
cific ocean. It lias an area of about
2,f)00 square miles, and its two
great central features, sas the
New Tacoma Ledger, are Gray's
Harbor, its natur.il outlet, and the
Chchalis river, a powerful stream
tributary to it. Tributary to them,
flowing from both the north and
the south are numerous small
streams, some of them of consid
erable size, and furnishing, when
combined, nearly 2,000 miles of
practicable way, all ot which is
available for lumbering pin poses,
and much of which is navigable.
The valleys of these streams are
all very fertile, and they are sub
ject to disastrous overflows. They
probaably contain a larger amount
of really valuable arable land than
any other region of similar extent
west of the Cascades, at least in
this territory. The greater portion
of these lands are covered with
an unusually light growth of al
der, vine maple, spruce and salmon
brush, easily cleared; and there
are also many small prairies inter
spersed with this timber, these
having as a rule, a rich soilj es
pecially in the lower Chehalis
country.
All these lands produce the
finest grasses, grains, vegetables
and fruits, and have been found
especially adapted to the dairy
interest, which is a leading indus
try in the country at the present
time. The uplands of the country
are covered with a magnificent
growth of heavy timber, consist
ing of red, white, and yellow fir,
hemlock, cedar, etc., and is pro
nounced by men of extended ex
perience, to be the finest and best
.Adapted, to Ijirabering purposes ofJ
any body of timber as yet known"
on the coast. There is still an
abundance of government land,
both timber and agricultural, to be
had in the county, though it is
being taken up very fast, the
records in the land office at Obym-
pia show that during the month of
October, there were 30 entries of
timber lands, and 100 entries of
homesteads and pre-emptions
made within its limits. Thepopu
lation of the county is variously
estimated at from three to five
thousand, though this is probably
low, as its vote one year ago was
700, and it is expected that the
votes cast at the recent election
will be found to exceed 1000,
though returns are not all in at
this writing. Thcie can be no
doubt, however, that the popula
tion of the count' is increasing
rapidly disinterested estimates
placing the increase at 100 per
cent, during the past six months.
To new comers in the territory, it
is a matter of surprise that a
region containing the advantages
evident in this case, should, as to
population and general develop
ment, have remained so'far behind
other localities in western Wash-
ington, less favored by nature.
Iuquiry, however, develops the
fact that it has remained undevel
oped on account of the lack of
sufficient means of communication
and intercourse with the outside
world. This matter has now,
however, been so far remedied as
to admit of prospective and imme
diate increase of advancement for
the Chehalis valley. The erection
of a large sawmill by Simpson
Bros, at the mouth of the Hoquiam
river, on Gray's Harber, and the
location of Hume's cannery near
the place, to be followed during
the season by the establishment of
other mills, and other canneries,
has brought to the lower portion
of the country many vessels, and
many of them large sea-going
ships, and these together with the
services of a river steamer plying
between the head waters of the
Chehalis and Gray's Harbor, and
touching semi-weekly at Elma,
Montesano, the county seat, and
nkny other pcints along the river,
have opened up communication
with Portland and San Francisco,
and thus furnished a good market
for all the products of the entire
country. In the natural order of
things the trade of this county,
which is shoitly to be enormous,
should come to the Sound, but as
the building of a railroad from
Olyinpia to Gray's Harbor will' be
necessary to that end, it is not
probable that the above named
point will monopolize it for omc
time to come. Vaiious railroad
projects, looking to the connection
referred to. are being agitated,
but, as yet, nothing definite has
taken shape. Present lack of
railroad facilities, however, need
not in the least, and in fact docs
not deter settlement, for thete is
now abundant means of communi
cation by sea, and ample market
facilities afforded without them.
Brutality ot Polygamy.
There is a man in this city who
is a porygamist; who has a pleas
ant address; who stands high in
the favor of the authorities of his
church; who talks well: who would,
by a man like C'apt. Codman, be
pointed out to eastern people as a
living evidence of the malice and
falsehood which fills the hearts of
decent people when they denounce
polygamy. By his real wife that
man became the father of several
children. Upon her death and the
assuming of power by the second
wife, the father drove every child
of his first wife away from home.
He gave one delicate child, a little
little girl of eleven years of age,
to a brutal farmer in the country;
that man sent the child to tend
stock on the mountains, and com
pelled her to sleep alone in a tent
on the moutam side, where every
night the child suffered the agony
of the damned in natural childish
fear. Now. the children are scat
tered through three or four states
and territories, and though this
.childis heie in thej. ;city,''f he .nn-
uaiuini uruiv; ui ji wiuiiT uat llUl
called to see her for seTen months..
And he is well off. lie has abun
dant means to provide for his chil
dren, and were it not so, he has
two strong arms and could earn a
comfortable living for them. But
the shame of her place haunted
the second wife until the first wife
died, and then the hate which had
been smouldering through the
years burst into flame, and she de
termined that the presence of that
woman's children should not be a
reproach to her and her children
any longer. And the father, eni
bruted by his former acts, having
learned to think of his children as
he did of his calves by different
cows, turned his heart against his
first born, and drove all the chil
dren which the wife of his youth
had borne to him into the street at
the bidding of the woman who,
in. that way, sought for a respite
from the cries which her own
wounded womanhood had been
assailing her soul with for years.
. The foregoing is no fancy sketch.
The iittle girl who was sent to the
mountains alone to herd stock and
to sleep alone in a tent on the
mountain side is light heie, and
can be seen by any who are curi
ous to investigate the case. And
yet this infamous system which
transforms a man into a brute and
a woman'into a fiend, we are told
is a system which the God of
Justice declares to be necessary in
order to save the souls of forlorn
women. It is this system which
George Q. Cannon councils his
people to practice, even if in
doing so it is necessary to set all
laws at defiance. Is it not time
that something direct should be
done to stop this business? The
Thugs mercifully killed their
victims, they did not put their
own children out in the mountains
to die of cold and fear. If any
one thinks we arc wrong, it will
cure him to listen for half an hour
to the story of the child who was
made a stock herder. Salt Lake
Tribune.

Progress of tlie Northern Pacific.
Col. Charles B. Lamborn, Land
Commissioner of the Xoithern
Pacific, Iiab just iViurned from a
trip as far west sis Helena. lie
stated that the track was now l.iid
toapointseventy-five miles west of
Billinirs, and that it would be coin
pletcd to Livingston in thirty
days. It is the intention to nmko a
big town at Livingston, which is
just at the base, of the big grade
which takes the load over the
mountain. It is to be the junction
of the spur up the Yellowstone to
the National park, the route of
which is now surveyed and upon
which work is to begin at once,
with the view of completing it into
the park early enough in the spring
to accommodate the tourist travel
of next season. It is the intention
to build at Livingston the largest
car shops between Portland and
Brainerd, and also to construct
three railing mills, as a vast de
posit of the very best bituminous
coal has been discovered within
three miles of the proposed new
town. Bozeman and Helena, Col.
Lamborn stated, both begin to feel
the effects of the railway, and the
former place is now equal to the
palmiest days of Leadville, so far
as the sensational features of
gambling and dance houses arc
concerned. The business men of
Billings are alr.eacty making prepa
rations to establish branch houses
at Livingston, and the town is ex
pected to at once jump into promi
nence and prosperit'.
