The result of the election on the 7th inst., varys little from the re capitulation given in yesterdaj-'s issue. "With the exception of Vir ginia, which stayed solidly by Ma hone, the returns everywhere show Democratic gains. In Alabama the usual 40,000 Democratic ma jority is increased; so also, in Ar kansas; the 102 Democratic ma jority in California swells to S,000, the probability now being that the Democrats elect a full state ticket, including six congressmen. Colo rado, which gave Garfield 2,800 majority, still stays in the Repub lican ranks, but Connecticut breaks away, Delaware going Democratic by its usual majority, as do Florida and Georgia. Illinois gives 20, 000 Republican majority, while Iowa's 7S,000 in 1SS0, is cut down to 40,000. Kansas, which gave G1,000 Republican majority two years ago, elects a Democratic governor; this is one of the biggest surprises of the whole light, and can only be explained on the ground of St. John's prohibition record. Kentucky, Louisiana and Maryland give the regular Demo cratic majority, and to the aston ishment of all, Massachusetts re pudiates the 53,000 majority she gave to the Republicans but two years ago, and elects a "Democrat ic governor Ben Butler by 15, 00,0 majorit'. The Republican ma jority of Michigan and Minnesota sets off the opposition majority in Missouri and Mississippi; Nebraska shakily sustains the popular will but defeats the proposed amend ment to the constitution as regards woman suffrage. Nevada, which b' nature and education, is Demo cratic, gives itself over to that party, body and alleged soul. New Hampshire is Republican and New Jersey Democratic. The hist state deserves a vote of thanks for de feating Robeson for congress, the man who squandered 100,000,000 on our "navy." New York per forms the greatest political sum mersault in the history of the country. From a Garfield ma jority of 21,000 she goes to a Cleveland majority of 172,000. This is good; it proves that "the boss" can no longer crack a party whip over the shoulders of the voters. It tells Mr. Conklitig et. al, "you are no longer in power." Pennsylvania tramples on the traditions of a quarter of a century and of two evils chooses the least, rejecting Don Cameron's candidate and electing the Democrat, Patti son. The rest of the thirty voting states give the usual party ma jorities. Dakota and Washington elect Republican delegates, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming and New Mexico Democratic ones. In Idaho, Singiser, Republican and annexation is probably elected. There were 203 congressmen uiuuiuu uxaciiy me numocr in the last house of representatives, the next house having 325; the 32 that were already elected gave a Democratic gain, .which was greatly augmented by the No vember election, so that the next United btates congress will, for the third time in the history of the country, be composed of a Republican senate, a Democratic house, in connection with a presi dent who is not m accord with either branches of the legislative department. As a general thing the election of the congressmen is the test of party strength. Were this the case this time it would be an overwhelming Democratic victory. But apart from ques tions of state importance, which includes prohibition , license , woman suffrage, constitutions, etc., the great questions were "shall bossism and political assess ments prevail?" Fortunately for our country the intelligence of the nation emphatically answered in the negative. There were 509 votes cast at the polling place at New Iberia, Louisiana, last Tuesday, but when they counted the ballots the tally showed .645.
