The Male Elections.
Tin: result is just as much
Republican victory as it is a
Democratic one. It does not
mean that the country wishes
Democratic leadership, but it de
mands that bossism shall be sat
down upon in any and every
section ol the union. That was
the keynote of the music played
two years ago when Garfield was
elected in spite of the prophecies
of those who stayed with Grant in
the Chicago convention, though
the opposing faction won the
prize of the presidency and presi
dential patronage in "the lottery
of assassination.' Last Tuesday's
election is simply a continuation
of the. samc feeling. And it is
right. The duties of the presi
dent and his cabinet are cleaily
defined in the fundamental and
statutory laws, and they have no
more right, as presidents and
heads of departments, to interfere
in or meddle with a .state election,
no. more right to do any ofiicial
act with a view of influencing the
vote of a state than the voters of
any state have to nullify the acts
of congress or trample on the
constitution.
If this high tide of usurpative
encroachment, this flagrant abuse
of power, this turning of the peo
ple's governmental mechanism
against the people, had not been
reached by many successive steps,
we should see the waves and hear
the roar of popular wrath sweeping
over the continent. But it is a
fact, that the people had become
so accustomed to the nrojjress of
this slow but sure revolution that
the' were not astonished until the
president and his cabinet virtually
undertook to elect the oflicers of a
state, instead of leaving the peo
ple to elect their own ofliceis.
It cost a million lives and some
billions of money to put down se
cession. Dangerous as that heresy
was, it was less dishonest and cor-
& - ruptinir than the process bv which
LilfciJw ilKl1 is worth preserving in ou
government has been undermined
and torn down.
But the line was drawn last
Tuesday. A few more cabinet
consultations on state campaigns, a
few more attempts to put a cabi
net officer into a gubernatorial
chair to pave the war for the inarch
of presidential ambitious, a few
more efforts by a cabinet officer to
use the prestige of his position to
frighten business men into the
support of his candidacy, a few
more prostitutions of the execu
tive mechanism in all its depart
ments to low partisan uses and the
purposes of schemers and tricks
ters, a few more brazen presump
tions on the stolid indifference of
the people to their rights, and thcie
was such an uprising as we hope
has put down this business by the
ballot as effectually as its elder
brother, secession, was suppicsscd
by the bullet.
From reliable authority tin W.
"W. Union learns that it is the in
tention of the O.Tt.&y.'Co. to
begin the building of a new steam
er early in the coming year to
iiiiwgiius niu waicrs 01 me upper
Columbia river above. Kettle Kails.
The river is navigable for a light
draft boat for a di.stnice of over
three hundred miles, and with a
short and easily graded road to
Spokane Fall connections can be
made between the Northern and
Canadian Pacific railroads. "When
this new branch of service is in
operation it will open uj) si huge
country to settlement.
Tin: Seattle Post-Intelligencer
is informed that laborers arrive bv
every train to go to woik on ihe
Paget Sound Shore Line mil road.
Forty white men and one hundred
. Chinamen are already at work ten
miles east of Tacoma, and one
hundred more are expected to
commence work in afctv days.
Mir, Jay Hcjiiiklt. has probabl
learned by this time that bulldos
ing poor government clerks" ro
help swell the cofTers of a corrup
tion fund is as unfortunate in its
results as its dirty intricacy well
could be.
Among all the election debris
let a song of triumph go up that
the infamous Robeson has been
