ASTORIA. OREGON :
SUNDAY OCTOBER 20. 1SS2
J. r. HALLOUAX
Editor
As II Seems.
"What possible interefcl can it
lacli to a lot of nasty revelations
concerning the Scovillcs and Gui
teau's sister, we are at a loss to un
derstand. "We had hoped that
when the wretch who mur
dered Garfield was executed, the
whole miserable business of daily
telegraphic report about It would
be ended; but every day comes
"news" concerning who Mrs. Sco
ville kissed, and what Mrs. Sco
ville said, and on whose lap Mrs.
Scoville sat as if airyone was in
terested, and that suggests another
thought, that the simple sending of
the statement 2,000 miles over a
wire doesn't make tiacs out of it.
We read in the Oregonian of a
man being drowned in the St.
Lawrence river, and a girl being
ravished in Alabama, and a boy
falling into a pond in Maine, etc.,
but fail to see in what way that can
be construed into intelligence. In
the ordinary course of events, any
one who reali.es what an enormous
scope of country the Union is, can
easily imagine a daily record of
crimes and casualties. The won
derful pari of it would be to have
50,000,000 people pass a day with
outsome deviltry or accident occur
ring in some nook or corner of the
thirty-eight states. As it is, it
looks as though the editor's desk
AVas made the dumping ground for
all the rubbish in the country, and
because it is sent by telegraph it
is labeled news.
TiunTEUN" of the survivors of
Col. Stevenson's old command of
Mexican war veterans of the First
New York Volunteers had a re
union and dinner last Tuesday. A
despatch from Col. Stevenson, who
is in San Francisco, was received,
asking "God's blessing on his old
boys." Major Clark gave a brief
review of the history of the old
regiment. Over two-thirds of its
original thousand members, he
said, were under twenty-one years
of age -when they were enrolled,
and perhaps that accounted for
the youthful appearance of those
assembled around the table. It
was considered an arduous under
taking in those days, continued the
speaker, to go to California.
Gold had-not been discovered and
it was an unknown land. Although
the regiment did not sec much
active service, still it had encoun
tered many hardships. Of the
original 1000 only l.0 were lefU
Most of the survivors live in Cali
fornia, but about forty had ic
turned to the east. The world had
dealt kindlywith the most of them,
and the survivors represented
2",000,000 of capital.
A Vhtoima despatch s.-rys that
miners working in a bank at ( 'as
hlar found about thirty Chinese
coins strung-on a wire six feet be
low the surface. The wire crum
bled to pieces on exposure to the
air. The coins are said by the
Chinese to be over 3,000 years
old. The question is now asked:
"Were the Chinese the fir.,, set
tlers of this .continent?"
Ti:i: surgeon-general of the
army anil navy has made a leporl
to Secretary Lincoln, recommend
ing five acres in the southwest
corner of the Hot Spring moun
tain as the site for the proposed
army and navy hospital, for the
construction of which 800,000
was appropriated at the last session
of congress.
Tiie "Washington territory
papers make a very good point in
suggesting to the voters that a full
vote should be cast at the election
on November seventh. The ex
hibit of a large vote will be a
good argument for the delegate to
make in urging the claims of the
territory before congress for ad
mission into the union.
JThe San Francisco registry books
show a total of 43,000 voters in
that city.
A single vote makes consider
able difference sometimes. At
the late election m Ohio, the Re
publicans carried three congres
sional districts by a combined
majority of sixty-two. A few
more votes in two other districts '
would have given them two more
congressmen. i
Tim: Philadelphians have ju.t
finished celebrating the two- '
hundredth anniversary' of the
founding of their city. The
Quaker city is to-day the most j
distinctively American citv in the i
United States.
De-imti: the time consumed in
the senatorial fight, the legislature
found time to defeat the registra
tion bill, one of the most worthy
of .the hundreds that were intro
duced. Ciia. Noni:. of Xez Pei'-f-county,
Idaho, has declined :
legislative nomination. H
