Green is m the city, and reports satisfactory progress with the telegraph line between here and the cape. On the lstinst., Prof. Meyei will give a grand concert at Liberty hall, assisted by the best musical talent in the city. --Yesterday afternoon, the wind rose and chopping around to the southwest made it unpleasant for all outside work. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Mcintosh returned home last evening from their bridal tour. They were met at the dock by a crowd of friends who warm ly welcome.! them back. In the list of claims allowed by the legislature we notice that IX C. Ireland, formerly of this city, was paid SG37.r0 for services as clerk of the hoard of pilot commissioners. Doiui in Wehfoot at the mouth of the Columbia river when they see the gun lately they write articles longer than a Grande Ronde editorial. Ortoidc Jlomlc Pout. Yes: and it is done in good .shape, too. Yesterday's Oregonian announces the schooner Fanny Dutard, as being en route from San Francisco to the Colorado river and Columbia river "and Sau Pedro." Probably swing- ing for tho five spot. Tho body found on Chinook beach is supposed to be that of a man buried from the ship City of Sparta. As the face is much bruised and eyes black cued and swollen, grave fears are en tertained that the man has been foully dealt with. We received a large consignment of paper yesterday from San Fran Cisco, via Portland. The 0. R. it X. Co., or the Pacific Coast Steam ship company, we don't know which, only charged freight one way. Such a contemptible style of doing business as to take freight past our own door 110 miles up the creel;, and then car ry it back again, is on a par with a system that charges as much for freight and passage from San Francisco to Astoria, as from San Francisco to Portland. The life-saving crew at the cape had n drill last Wednesday forenoon, with the life boat in the breakers. The boat stood the breakers nobly and the crew pulled with admirable pre cision and dexterity. Some of tho breakers were very Tieavy, one strick- ing the boat broadside, throwing her nearly on her beam ends and drench ing the crew. One oar was broken and three lost, but soon recovered. The utmost confidence in CapL llarris prevailed and good order and humor maintained throughout. County Wealth. From the assessment roll of the county for the current year wo learn that the number of acres of land taxed is 74,4S1, the value being set at 239,222; the value of town lots is $G01,59G; improvements, 520,0S4; merchandise and implements, $823,- 929: money, notes, stocks, etc., S471, G24; household furniture, $G6,998; number of horses and mules, 342, worth $15,243; number of cattle, 2.G31. worth $44,173; number of sheep, 1,772, worth $2,GG4; number of swine, 912, worth $2,815; total value of proierty as assessed, $2,934, i)18. From this is deducted in debtedness aud exemptions, leaving the total as returned by the assessor, $2,173,455, and as equalized by county court, $1,924,083. The num ber of polls is estimated to be 1,500. Tho total tax is 1G1 mills, which, exclusive of poll tax, would give an amount of $31,757.20 for shite and county. j- Notes, building to Ure- I. l lie railroad now gon is already running on both sides of tho Sacramento river io Tehama, and from there, united, it runs to Redding. Steel mils for a further ; distance of forty-two miles are ready for use. The company, during the winter, propose building its culverts j and bridges, as well as doing other work, preparatory to putting on a full .force in the spring, when the weather and the ground are best calculated for road building. The Yillard portion, from ltosc burg down, is much the most ditiicult work, because of heavy tunneling. It can scarcely bo expected to get along-as fast as the California portion, which is promised to be finished inside of two years. The .Central Railroad com pany has nearly always discounted the time set in finishing any and all of their roads, and it is hoped the pres ent enterprise will prove no excep tion. The present staye travel on the Yreka and Oregon route is so blocked with mail inside and out, that only the driver's seat is left to take passen gers. S. F. lirilkiln. Debating and Literary Society. A number of persons assembled r.t Y. M. C. A. hall on Friday evening, October 20th, for the purpose of or ganizing a literary and debating so ciety. A temporary organization was effected and a committee on constitu tion and by-laws appointed. This evening a permanent organization will be effected and the new ship will be launched. The new society is de signed to benefit both young and old, and all are cordially invited to come and share its benefits. "A real good time" is expected ihis winter, so "wake up" ami come to the "launch." A suitable programme will be provided for the evening. F. D. Win-ion, 1'iesident. T. R. Coon, Secretary. He had start ed from a point on the Oregon side about three miles below Ranier, and nearly reached the Washington Terri tory side, just below the month of the Cowlitz, when he appeared to run into a floating tree, his boat immediately upsetting and throwing the unfortu nate man into the water, where, after a few ineffective struggles, lie sank to death. He was a married man. aged 40 years, living near Kalama. "The Magic Doll." The difference in the make-up, rig ging, etc., of schooners aud baikcn tincs in theso days is noticeable io old salts who ploughed the briny, thirty years ago. Time was when duck sails were a novelty on auything smaller than a bark, and the first suit of cot ton duck sails carried on a schooner attracted attention. In the recollec tion of many who lead this, sails were commonly made of "Russia duck." a loosely woven hemp cloth of a dirty gray color. On account of the open nature of the sails an instrument called the "scout horn," consisting of a boot leg attached to a long pole and used for wetting the cloth to make it hold the wind, was in the outfit of every vessel. "Scouting the sails," was a regular and almost constant work on ship-board in tho3e days for coasters. Next in importance to the sails comes the steering apparatus, aud in this, modern machinery has done away with a great deal of "main strength and clumsiness." The rud der itself has been made somewhat narrower and the corner taken off the lower extremit. bringing its widest part nearer the water line. But above decks the mechanism of the helm has seen many changes. Iu early years this consisted only of the tiller and lillcr-ropcs, the former being simply a spar from four to eight feet long mortised into the rudder head, and the forward end bent up ward to about four feet above the deck; the latter, two ropc3 fastened at cither side to the deck to be used iu steadying the tiller in rough weather. In steering, the helmsman took the tiller under one arm, and steadied himself and the tiller by taking a turn of one of the ropes around its end, which was furnished with a large head to prevent the rope from slipping oil. This has been changed through successive steps till now, with the improved ''standing" wheel a sailor can handle a thousand ton ship with les3 outlay of strength than was once required to steer a hundred ton schooner. Going fnrVil we find another radic al change. Now the heavy anchor chain enters the hawse hole, passes once over a "wild-cat" windlass and disappears in the chain box below the deck, while the windlass is. worked by a combination of levers, pawls and brakes, rendering it possiblo for half dozen men to raise an anchor that would have been impossiblo in ye old en time to have carried. In the an cient craft the chain was unknown tho hemp cablo being used exclusively. This was passed three or four times around the wooden windlass and the "turn" held by one or more men with a watch tackle. The windlass was worked with hand spikes inserted in holes in its sides. When the two cables were all on board and the anchor "catted" the greater part of the deck was occupied by coils of Uio rope. Tn blocks there has been almost a complete revolution. The rope strap has now given placo to iron, but this can hardly be set down as an improve ment except in the matter of looks, as a Haw iu the metal is hardly ever discovered in the metal until it breaks, while with proper care the rope strap ped block could always be depended on. lint the patent rollers instead of the wooden sheave working on a wooden pin ina' be set down a labor saving invention. -The finest cider of the season at Conn's to-day: fresh and sweet.
