ASTORIA. OREGON:
SUNDAY OCTOBER 15. 1SS2
J. F. HALLORAV. Ldilur
TJie Columbia Riwr Ilriugc.
Tun New Tacomn. Ledger is
informed that the construction
forces lately employed on the river
division of the O. E. & N. road
are being removed to the new line
and are to be set to work without j
delay. Engineer Charles F.
"White, who 'has for years taken
prominent part in the Northern
Pacific railroad surveys of this
region, and particularly on the
Cascade range started out from
Portland on the Cth instant in
charge of a party to locate the line
from Portland toward Kalama and
is now engaged in that work. The
right of way has been nearly all
obtained and theie will not be any
delay on this account. The line
will pass down the Columbia river
on the Oregon side to a point
.opposite Kalama, and trains will
be transferred across the river on
a largetransfer boat now being
constructed in the east. This
will be a very large boat having
powerful machinery. .She will be
as long as the steamship Colum
bia, will .have side wheel engines
on her guards and a capacity for
carrying two trains The builders
are Harlan & Ilolhngsworth of "Wil
mington, Delaware. When com
pleted she will be shipped out in
sections and put together at Port
land. The transfer boat is to be
used at Kalama until the biidge
shall have been built there. Fiom
present indications the biidge will
be placed at :i point about a quar
ter of a mile above Kalama, that.
being found a better location than
Carroll's Point, which however has
the advantage that the river is nar
rower there than above. But at
Carroll's Point the depth of water
in the river is SO feet, while at the
place referred to near Kalama the
depth is only 30 feet.
Will President Arthur show
himself a second Jackson? Nullifi
cation, more inexcusable than that
which fifty years ago disgraced
South Carolina, has broken out in
Utah. Congress has absolute au
thority over, that territory as it has
over the District of Columbia, and
more absolute than the legis
lature of any state has over its po
litical affairs, liarly in August
congress empowered Coventor
Murry to appoint certain officials
to succeed those then incumbent
by election. The governor has
made the appointments, and Mor
mons in office have refused to give
up their places and their public
property to his appointees. Presi
dent Arthur's opportunity to pro
claim the supremacy of the law is
only second in importance to that
which Jackson availed himself of.
Tni: through lOuleof the South
ern Pacific Raihoad Company
fiom San Francisco to Xew Or
leans will be completed and in
operation on January 1, 1SS3. It
will be under the exclusive con
trol of the Central Pacific Railroad
Company, which will thus seeine
a through line fiom Ogden, Utah,
via Arizona, New Mexico and
Texas, to New Orleans.
It is estimated that in Idaho
over S,000 men ate engaged in
nulwav construction, cutting ties,
grading, blasting and tunneling,
timbering and track lay. The lines
upon which this woilc is beino
arc the Oregon Short Line, the
Oregon Railway & Navigation
company's line, and tho Northern
Pacific. ,
Fcrthek returns from Ohio
make no material difference in the
result of Tuesday's election. The
Republicans are badly beaten, and
'tis probable, from the result of
Tuesday's election, that the next
- house of representatives will be
mnder Democratic control.

made up their minds to vote the
independent ticket, as the only
way to rid the part' in this state
of machine rule. He believed J
the Democrats would elect their
candidates next month; but this
would not kill or seriously cripple
the Republican party. Once rid
of Cameronism the would re
organize on a new basis, which
would give the people control,
and would soon regain their lot
ground with a piospect of retain
ing the power for an indefinite
period. The sentiments e.pres.-ed
by thisjgentleman arc whispered
here and elsewhere in the sSate.
There seems no chance for the
Cameron ticket.
Ijirriii.riiiui, Pa., claims the
distinction of possessing the old
est hand fiie engine in the coun
try. It was built, by Brooks of
London in 1C9S and imported by
the Moravians of Bethlehem in
that year.Jn IS IS, after a century
and a half of honorable service, it
was retiied to the museum of the
Young Men. Missionary Society,
where it now i-. and, moreover in
working order. These statements
are attested by the maker's origin
al Kill and the shipping papers.
