The Growth of the United Stales.

tendent of the last census, con
tributes to the October Century a
paper abounding in interesting and
important facts rleaned from the
census returns since the first enu
meration in 1790. In discussing
the condition of the United States,
at the tenth census in 1880, he says:
Tlie period between 1850 and
1880 has been marked by the as
tonishingly rapid spread of popu
lation over the vast region brought
under the flag of the United States
by the purchase of Louisiana, the
annexation of Texas, and the ces
sions from Mexico. The 980,000
square miles of territory occupied
by settlements in 1S.0 have be
come 1,570,000. Of these, 331,820
have between J2 and G inhabitants
to the square mile; 373,890 have
between 0 and IS; 551,'JOO be
tween IS and 45; 32,010 between
45 and 00; while 21,550 have in
excess of 00 inhabitant to the
square mile. The population of
the United Slates i? now 50,155,
783. The frontier line of settle
ment is, in general, the one hun
dretli degree of longitude as far
north as the forty-second parallel
of latitude, and, .thence northward,
the ninety-ninth and afterward the
ninety-eighth degree.
The distribution of the popula
tion according to dominant topo
graphical features may be thus
stated: On the immediate Atlan
tic coast, north, 2,G1G.892; middle,
4,375,184; south, S75,3Si"; on the
Gulf coast, 1,055,851; in the hilly
and mountainous region of the
north-east. 1,G69,22G; in the moun
tainous region of the central At
lantic slope, 2,344,223; in the im
mediate region of the Lakes, 3,
040,470; on the table-lands and
elevated plateaus of the interior,
5,710,326; in the south central
mountainous region, 2,095,085; in
the Ohio Valley, 2,442,792; on
the south interior table-lauds and
plateaus, 3,0-27,438; in the Mis
sissippi belt, south, 710,208, north,
1,991,362; in the south-west
central region, 2,932,807; in the
central region, 4,401,240; in the
prairie region, 5,922,485; in the
Missouri river belt, 835.455; on
the western plains, 323,819; in the
heavy timber region of'the north
west, 1,122,337; in the Cordiileran
region, 932,311; on the Pacific
coast, 715,789.
, Although the territory of the
United States extends to the forty
ninth parallel, only one-tenth ol
the poulation is found north of the
forty-third." But so dense is the
settlement below this line that, by
the time the forty-first parallel is
reached, about one-third of the
population has been covered; the
next simgle degree extends the
population nearly to one-half,
while more than two-thirds lie
north oLthe thirty-eighth parallel.
Between the foity-third and the
thirty-eighth dwell 29,500,000 of
our people. Tn 1870, 52.S per
cent, of the population was east of
the eighty-fourth meridian. In
1880, only 49.4 per cent, was so
placed. Eighty-foui per cent, of
the population is found east of the
ninety-first meridian; 97 per cent,
casfoof thoiiinety-seventh. .
The foreign elements of our
population have varied widely
since 1850. At that time foreign
ers constituted 9.5 per cent, of the
total population; they now consti
tute 13.3 per cent. .Of the foreign
residents of 1850, 43.5 per cent.
were Irish; 26.4, Germans; 13.9
English and Welsh; 0.7, British
Americans; while the Scandina
vians formed Jess than one per
cent. Since that time, the pro
portion of Irish to the other foreign
elements has steadily declined.
Of the arrivals in the ten years
ending 1850, .the Germans were
25 per cent..; of those in the ten
years cndfng in 1S60, they were

To-day the number of foreign
ers living among us is a little over
0,500,000, while the members of
the colored race reach almost that
number. Speaking roundly, then,
the following is the table to our

The location of the colored and

conditions, which ought to prevent
