Still Balloting.
LSrRCIAl.TOTlIK AblOltlAN.J
Salkm Sept. 22.
Two ballots wore taken to -clay, I
thus relieving the monotony i
attendant on a single ballot; both'
crave the same it-suit Mitchell. 1
n j
36; Prim, S3: failing, 17; Thayer,
3; George, 1. The substitution of
Failing anil Thayer for "Williams
and Boise, is an indication of the
iluctuations in the minds of those
who are opposed to the decisions
of the caucus. It is generally
believed that balloting will con
tinue for several days, if the anti
Mitchell men continue changing,
but if they try any attempt to con
centrate on Williams or Dolph,
the Democrats will rally to the
Mitchell standard. They say
that if they must have a Republi
can they prefer Mitchell. Men
who claim to Fee as far into a. I
grindstone as anybody, say that
some Democratic voids will.be cast
for Mitchell to-morrow. Tf so, he
will be elected.
Dk. Caiiill, of San Francisco,
has a theory that the destruction of
the world is not very far off, and
that when the calamity comes it
will be by ice pressuie. The pre
monitory symptoms of teirestrial
dissolution are to be found in the
frequency of earthquakes which
every now and then go zigzagging
around the planet.
New Castle, Delaware, is the
only city in the country lhajt has
no municipal or school taxes to
pay. The revenue coming in from
land with which the city was en
dowed by "William Penn, is suffi
cient to meet the e.xp.nse of lim
ning the government.
Nearly" 2f0 bills have been
introduced into the legislature so
far this seasen: the time spent in
electing .T. H. Mitchell may take
some of the days that could be
devoted to the eonsideiatlon of
those measures for relief and im
provement.
