The Yroka Journal says: The average amount of imi! matter leav ing Redding for Oregon and the coun try north of the railroad terminus, figures up nearly 4,000 pound every day. --The I Sen. Miles will leave for f!rny"i Harbor to-morrow inoining with a cargo of general merchandise. On her return she will bring back a load of salmon and cedar lumber, and about the :17th .she will go to Tilla mook. The board of directors of the State Firemen's association, which met at Salem la&t 'Wednesday, de cided to hold a fire tournament in Salem on the loth and 30th of June, ISStt. A full set of rules and regula tions were adopted. Our Astoria bo3's will be on hand when the time comes, - -The O. 11. ;v N. dock presents a busy appearance, with the numerous vessels loading and discharging. The Lnncefield was finishing her cargo yes tcrdav: the Robert Dixon had put "100 tons of merchandise aboard the Oeklahama, and that vessel and the Astoria were putting out railroad iron on the dock. - Mr. H. Sloop, count superin tendent of public instruction, requests us to announce that the quarterly ex amination of persons desirous of ob taining certificates entitling them to teach in the public schools of Clatsop county, will be held at the Court house, on the Jlth and 'iOili ins!., commencing at 0 a. m. --Capt. Jno. Wood is over fiom South "Bend and reports everything lively :n that section. Thev have built two dams across the rTasel this season, and as soon as he cm get his steamer over there has 2,000,000 feet of lumber to bring down to the mill. Capt. As there is much talk about a road to Clatsop Plains, and there is going to be some trouble about bridging the bay from Smith's point to Skipanon, I would suggest the propriety of cross ing at the old mill, on Young's river, or some point above, and thence crossing to ijcwis anu uiarks river, there is a good and easy route, thence by the Ft. Clatsop road on through the canyon pass to the plains. This road can be built at a much less cost, and would be a much safer and useful road, as it wculd connect Young's river, Lewis and Clarks and Clatsop Plains with the city of Astoria. This road is nearer and cheaper than the Smith point road, and if it is to be a toll road it would get all the travel the Smith point road would and nil of Young's and Lewis and Clark's rivers besides. There should be a petition signed uy an ami sent, to our senator, asking In in to secure the right to bridge these streams at or above the places named. This is no fancy sketch, but a real ity ."Now is the time to secure the right to bridge those streams. Let all work together for the interest of Astoria and the con 1113. Resident. The Senatorial Fight- JSrKi-: I loTlIK ATH! I. X. i Svu'M, Sept. 21st -8 I. M. The one topic here is Mitchell, or i There is moio talk to the Square inch than could be realized by one not on the ground, but the vote to-day tells the story as well as a column of explanation. The legislature met in joint convention with this leault: Mitchell, thirty-six: l'riin, thirty three: Williams, sixteen: Uoise, three: George. ene: .lude Prim voting blank. Both sides ieein determined to stay with their candidate, and though there i confident assertions made that "something will happen to morrow," the best informed cannot tell whe.ro the lightning may strike. One iliiiitrisciire? Miteli"!! is not f?iin?r -. o o o to lose any strength, and though even yet it is spasmodically announced that a Democratic success will be the out come of the deadlock, yet it is beyond possibility that such result could en sue. The above is all that could be got from Salem last night. It will be seen that Mitchell and Prim got pre cisely the same vote yesterday that they did the day before, but the votes that Boise got last Wednesday, have been transferred to Williams. This afternoon will probably bring some definite news. Territorial Republican Nominations. Tho.s. 11. Brents got the Territoiial nomination for congressional delegate at the Vancouver convention lal Wed nesday. .Ia. Burke was nominated for the joint council district of Che halis, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Pa cific: and for joint represent ives for the" same district, Ed. Campbell, of Chchalis and Benj. Barlow, of Cow litz, were nominated. Oco. C. Israel, of Thurston, received the nomination for prosecuting attorney for that dis tiict. -Major M. A. McPherson, of Whatcom, was nominated for Brig. Oen., R. G. O'Brien, of Thtiraton, for Adjutaiit-Oencral: John H.Smith, of Walla Walla, for Quartcrmaster C.'cneral, and Chas. B. Hopkins, of Whitman, for Cominissary-Cicnornl. The Harvest Moon. The September moon fulls on next Wednesday, the 27th, at 12:20 .v. v. It is the beautiful harvest moon and possesses special claims to distinction. For. owiiiii to- the position of the ecliptic in regard to the equator at this season, the moon rises for several consecutive nights with only a com paratively small interval between the successive rising, the snort autum nal days seem thus to be prolonged by the Hoods of silvery moonlight that make the night beautiful as day. The phenomenon is as easily explained as the axial rotation of the earth. JJnt in the older times, wlfen man was nearer to nature, the harvest moon was considered a direct interposition of Providence to assist the husband men in gathering tho harvest. Astukian: i A very pleasant alfair'took place at Kuappa last Tuesday evening. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Badciific gave them a-parrV at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. .1. F. Warren, Owing to the delicate health of Mrs. P., it was deemed advisable to inform them .of their plans, which was done. Strict orders were given that no presents be brought, therefore there were none brought except by near relatives. During the evening the services of our gentlemanly justice. Mr. L. N. Mitch ell, was brought into requisition to perforin an original and amusing mar rirve eureniimv. which caused consid- .-, , crable amusement. Mrs. I, was at tired in the dress worn fifteen years ago, upon her wedding day. A boun teous supper (which did credit to those having the matter in charge) was par taken of at eleven o'clock. The in clemency of the weather prevented many from being present; as it was," there were fifty in attend-mce, many declaring it to be the most enjoyable affair ever held at Knappa. Many were the heart-felt wishes expressed for the happiness, health, and future prosperity -of both Mr. and Mrs. P.. and that they might be. spared to meet their friends and neighbors fifteen years hence, when loving friends will gladly lay pearl offerings on the altar of affection. O.m: Pi:k.nKXT. Rush of Freight for Oiegon. ( hvgon is taking a large quantity of merchandise from San Francisco about the.-e days, and sending us in return a large quantity of produce. There is a regular steamer every four days hence to Portland. They are all large carriers. Bnt'lhese have of late been insufficient to meet the demands. Two of the Seattle Coal company's steam ers have of late been pressed into the service. One of these, the Mississippi, left on Saturday with a full cargo for Oregon. She failed to take all the freight olFercd, so the Cmatilla, a much larger steamship of the same line, has been secured to follow. Hoods were going on boaid of her all day yesterday at a very lively rate, and the same thing has been repeated to-day. This freight embraces all de scriptions ot merchandise. Oregon has no sugar refineries, and so gets all its refined sugar from San Francisco. There are many other descriptions of manufacture unrepresented in Oregon, or at least on a scale not- commensu rate with her demand?. As a result, we arc sending up to our neighbors at the north many articles" which are produced in California. We arc also rcshipping many things for which we are m a measure dependent on tho Atlantic states and foreign countries. What effect the northern roads, which are now pushing for a connection with the Atlantic slates and Canada, will have on our trade with Oregon and the ninth generally, time alone will fully demonstrate.
