Thi: situation remains unchanged. There will he a Ropubliran caucus to-night, in which "it is probable that ihhty-eight, ami certain that thirty-six will participate. This caucus will undoubtedly nominate Mitchell. It is pietly generally settled now. that the Democrats have given up any intention of holding a caucus. Several of them state publicly then intention, to vote for Mitchell. 3t is said that there arc sixteen Republicans who are equally free in expressing their intention to vote against Mitchell. The general belief around the capitol is that Mitchell will be elected, but not until after a pro tracted fight. The twenty-second annual ex hibition of the Oregon stale fair association began to-day; weather and prospects very good. The people of Salem want a railroad to Astoria. If Salem will help us to get the unearned rail road grant deela:ld forfeited,! hero will be some chance. The lailroad will be begun within three months after that grant i. out of the way. The Astoria railroad grant is now used to prevent any one fiom building to Astoria by those whose interests are to have no road here. We wish all the "Willamette alley people who wish a railroad to As toria to sign a petition to have the land grant forfeited. In these de generate days of free passes we may not succeed, but we will make the effort if our Willamette valley friends wil join us. When a very unusual or sensa tional event happens in n good many places remote from each other, about the same time, the imitative genius of the local editor is satisfactorily vindicated It is reported that Ileniy Villaid has expressed to Judge Deady a wdlingness to present the Oregon State University with a rift of fc 50,000, under conditions not yet made public. 3iAitim:i.
