Jl, '82 All day yesterday and to day the "burning" has bscn continued, and though nothing definite can be stated as yet, the indications are that there will be a lively tussie for the senator- ship, with Mitchell selling first in the pool. A permanent organization was ef fected this 'i. m., with state Ecnator W. J. McConnell, of Yamhill county, as president. The House organized at 2 o'clock, wiih Geo. McBride. of Columbia, as speaker. The Proposed Waterworks. Messrs. Thompson, and l)e kum, the gentlemen who propose erecting waterworks for the supply of this city, went on a tour of inspec tion while here lately. The source of supply not having been definitely de cided upon. It is generally under stood, however, that the water will be brought from Young's river, in olving the construction of eleven miles of water ways. For a part of this distance the water can be brought in a ditch, the canyons crossed by Hunting, after the manner of the hydraulic mines, and so brought by means of sluices and pipes to Young's river. Here a different system of piping will be used to carry the water to this side of that stream, and a reservoir and steam pump will be placed on the other side of the hill, from which water will bo pumped into an im mense reservoir at the top of C:iss street hill. This reservoir will be 1G0 feet square, and nine feet high; such a reservoir will hold 1,012,000 gallona of water. From this a six-inch main be run the entire length of the street, past Tar. Astokiak ollice, and, to the water front, with lateral branches on all the streets running east and west. A soparatc sj'stem, as efficient will bo put in operation running along the roadway for upper Astotia. Thi3 is, in general outline, about the way the projectors intend placing the mat ter. The reservoir which is to be 1S4 feet above the level of the sea, will when filled to its capacity, and in use, exert a pressure sufficient to send a stream of water eighty feet over the roof of the custom house. The plac ing of hydrants at the principal cor ners of the city w oiild be a valuable ad junct in case of fire, imparting an additional sense of security from that element. The main points will all be sottlcd, and the parties in charge intend beginning work at once. The three f'entleincn mentioned have each subscribed onc-fouith of the capital stock, and the remaining quar ter will iloubtlcss ue taken up as a good investment by some of our own townspeople. The three requisites seem to have been complied with in the terms as finally agreed to, viz: that the supply shall be ample, shall come from pure sources and be above tide water and shall be so distributed as to be of the most 'practical benefit to the present condition of tho city and its growing needs. j Murderous Assault upon an TTnof t fending Citizen. About twelve o'clock last Sunday night William Jt'alnter, a runner for Jim Turk's boarding house, shot and dangeronsly wounded Frank O'Brien, on the roadway opposite tho Fair Wind. Painter, who belong to that class of which any community 15 best off without, had got into some difficulty with a deck hand employed on tho S. O. Reed, and had. as U3iial, "gone down after his gun." O'Brien was; passing on his way from the dock, where he had been at work, and as al most any man w-iuld under the cir cumstances, he seized Palmer's hand as he was about to pull the trigger. That worthy instantly transferred the "bull dog," that be always carries, to his other hand and shot O'Brien, the ball Striking hint on the buttock and pus directly through his body, coming out at the thigh. He was immediately carried to St. Mary's Hospital where he now lies in a critical condition. Palmer was arrested, and .at noon Clark Luughary turned him over to the count' authorities. The wounded man fished here all this summer, and later has been work ing along the docks. His acquaint ances represent him to be qniet and inoffensive. This business is getting to be too frequent, and a certain class of toughs seem to have the idea that thei can do just about as they please as tar as the carrying ! concealed weapons is concerned. We would be among the very Last to advocate any attempt at reprisals that savors of re venge or disrespect for the law. but the simple doctrine of self-defense suggests that thi3 thing has gone about far enough. This is the latest of a good many such occurrences and wo arc of the opiniou that it is about time the community say "Stop!" Strategic Movement. FALL STOCK ! C. H. COOPER, GENERAL MERCHANDISE. The first number of the united Califomian and Overland Monthly will contain a critical study, by Prof. E. It. Sill, of the doctrines of Ralph Waldo Emerson; Rev. S. H. Willcy, pioneer organizer of the College of California, will contribute an inter esting sketch of what was proposed b' tho trustees at that time for that institution; also a story from the pen of W. C. Morrow, and poems by Elizabeth Stewart Phelps and Car lotta Perry. A Gallant Act. Yesterday afternoon the little daughter of Capt. Bairon, of the British bark Cordelia, now unloading at Gray's dock, fell from the taffrail of the vessel into the water. Capt. Lewis and Frank Eugene Tracy, of the scow Adelaide, heard the splash and ran to tho rescue. Tracy tried to untie the skiff that was lying along side the scow, but failing in this he plunged in without a'moment's hesita tion and struck out for the drowning child. The water at that point is forty feet deep, and the current a swift ono, but by superhuman exertions he succeeded in saving the little girl. The captain and his wife were of course transported with joy at the rescue of their darling and showered blessings on the head of her preserver. We understand a subscription was started for the brave fellow yesterday afternoon. In ancient Rome the highest crown and grandest honors were reserved for hint who saved the life of one in danger. To him who risks his life in the rolling waters of the Columbia is duo a meed of praise equal to any achievement wherein heroism is worthy of high commendation. The Line North. The Spokan Chronicle says that imini" gration is beginning to drift into the Coquille valley this year. It seems to be geneally suppose?! that the North ern Pacific branch to Kettle falls will be among the first feeders to be built, as the Canadian Pacific would un doubtedly use it in the construction of its line east and west of the cross ing of the Columbia. This is more probable since the selection of a pass through the Selkirk range, only 140 miles north of tho boundary line. The Columbia is navigable about 250 miles north of Kettle falls, and tho road from Spokane Falls to tho latter point would be only about 100 miles long. Cai:t.Adi.i:k. Death of General Iiovejoy. General A. L. Lovejoy died yester day evening at his residence, south east corner of Main .and East Park streets, in this city. He was bora in Massachusetts in 1808 and came to Oregon in 1842. The party in which he came was one of the first that ar rived in Oregon for its settlement as a community. Only four of that party are no known to be living: Sidney W. Moss, of Oregon City. J. It. Robb, of Portland, Mcdornm Craw ford, of Yamhill county, and F. X. Matlnou, of Marion county. General Lovejoy was speaker of the house of Oregon's provisional legislature in 1845,and was also speaker of the house, one term, of the territorial legislature, and a member of the constitutional convention, ne was quartormastor- gcneral of Oregon during the Cayuse war of 1847-48, and waa postal agent for Oregon under President Pierce. In 1848, General Lovejoy, in con junction with F. W. Pettigrove, founded this city. Soon afterwards these two gentlemen sold their inter ests therein to other parties, and Lovejoy moved to his place near Oregon City, where he resided for many years. He was for a long time one of Oregon's mo3t enterprising and wealthy men. The great flood of 1SG4 destroyed a large amount of Iiib valuable property in Oregon City and its vicinity. This together with the ireachery and dishonesty of supposed friends greatly diminished his for tune. Several years ago his health failed and he suffered much on account of a fall from a railroad bridge. Tho last few vears he has been unable to attend to active business. Orctjo iiimt 11.
