At a recent meeting of the San Erancisco Acadoinv-of Sciences, Dr. V. F. Dall, of the U. S. Coast Survey expedition, i elated some of hip experiences and ilisooveries in the Aretie i.rin and stated , that he, in company with .Mr. Bean', .Had left the city one month later Than usual last piii:g, but owing to favorable winds they had been vable to sail over :i larger extent of surface than the' had ever before done, their journey being nearly pf2,000 miles in leiigth. They had sailed over the North Pacific into .the southern part of the Arctic iocean. They had found the fishing to lie similar oil both the Ameri ;pan and Asiatic side. A large mumberof California fish had been found north of Sitka, and the cod fish and halibut were numerous, in fact, they formed :i large part of the food they had in those tegi on s. Among the important things which they investigated was the de termination a to, whether there were different species of salmon, or whether all salmon were of the same species in different grades of development. The' found the Columbia river'salmon throughout all sections of Alaska, and at first came to the conclusion that all the salmon belonged to the same species, but they finally found salmon which had to be chu-scd as a different species; for instance the king salmon, which frequently weigh 100 pounds, and the hump back salmon. A large number of trout were found on both sides. "The common Pacific brook-trout was found on the Asiatic side and have been caught in salt water. After examination in the merits of the cod and halibut, Dr. Bean became convinced that the Pacific cod was the same as the Atlantic, and there was no reason why the Pacific cod fisheries might not be- 'come as important as the Atlantic. Tin: legislature that assembled iti the capitol building yesterday have a. good deal of work to do. First in order, of couise, will be the election of U. S. senator, i Then begins the real business of the session. The school law is to be amended, the system of raising revenue will be changed, and im portant changes will be made in the assessment law. This is generally conceded (o be a. neces sity. The proper representation of Clatsop county is a matter that - might with great propriety be at . tended to. A registry law lo prevent, trickery at elections is also one of the necessities. Pro hibition and woman .suffrage are two' of the things to which the at tention of the legislature will be called. 4 TnE jury in the star route 'trial has disagreed, andliet-n remanded to the jury room for argument. It is positively stated that four of the twelve are bribed to "hing," and so have the case so over. NEW TO-DAY Co-Partnership Notice. "TITE TIIE ICTDEKSTGXED. J. E.THOMAS .
