r p; EIxs Suits &stato. - - 5 ASTORIA. OBE0OK THURSDAY.... SEPTEMBER 7, ;i8S2 i-iEduor J. F. BALIOEAXm. Hop Cnlturc. Nearly all our Washington territory exchanges contain arti-j cles relative to the present impetus given to hop raising and the extra ordinary opportunity it affords any one with a little laud and a fair stock of patience to make money in the culture of that vege table. "In an article on the subject, the Seattle ' Post-Tntelligenccr says: Hops are now selling here at about -15 cents a pound, but they cannot long remain at that if the price in England is to be $1 and upwards. The profits of hop production in a time like this rival the most fabulous narrations of trade. "In Washington. Air instance, 2,000 pounds are grown to the acre, easilv enough, while the average is almost 1.800. The actual cost is about S cents a pound. Taking the higher production, for a conve nience, we find $100 to be the cost of 2,000 pounds of hops. Sold at 45 cents a pound 000 are obtain ed; the actual profit being $74.0 for the season's work. At- 81 a pound the product will realize the grower 1,8S0 over all expenses, while at 2.50 he will haul in the very comfortable sum of 5,000. At such rates the growers here about, who have thirty- or forty acres each and one has over nine ty become veritable princes as far as income is concerned. It seems to be a general impres sion among the critics of the laic appropriation that each congress man who voted for the measure immediately pocketed a 'propor tionate share of the amount and started home to purchase a re-election with the proceeds. Tho fact is that the money is disbursed through the war depaj-ftnent, and no appropriations were made that were not recommended by the board of engineers of that bureau. The veto of President Arthur was over-ridden by a non-partisan vote, both parties contributing pros and cons in both branches of con gress. Odii navy is top-heavy. A"h ad miral, ten rear admirals, twenty five commodores, fifty captains, and hundreds of lower-grade offi cers are required in man tho tubs known by courlesy a.; the navy of the United Slates. There are too many oflicen-; and there is very Jitt'e.in the accomp lishments of any but a very few of them to appeal for their reten tion as full-rate figure-head siue c'urist. The proposed reduction does not go far enough or fast enough. Compared with the offi cial roster of the British navy, ours is grotesque. Jr the English are right in at tacking Egypt, it is in order now for the Americans and the English to occupy. Corea. The king and queen have been murdered because they executed a treaty with these governments; the people are all "rebels" as mu ch as Arabi. No better pretext need be desired for the seizure of a country, by a nation having the military strength to do so. Joaquin Mili.ec has been ridi culing the town of Shasta. Califor nia, in some of his writing. The papers of that place tell the reason why; they say that .he was once in jail there for horse" stealing.' It is not to be expected that he could have any very pleasant -recollections of the place, but Ids discre tion might have restrained him from expressing himself in print. NEW TO-DAY.
