"- t (:(f - mmn . Vol. xvii. Astoria, Oregon, Wednesday Morning, September fi, 1881 No. 135. vrrnl 1 New Discoveiy. The discovery of a deserted city, i si ty miles long, cut out of the': rocky face cf a winding cliff, re warded the effoiU of Mr. Steven son's Smithsonian Institution ex ploring parry dining its researches in Xew Mexico and Arizona the past season. This is by far the most important find yet made among the ancient haunts of the cliff dwellers. $01110 of the houses contain four or five dwel lings, one on top of the other, aud on the plateau above the cliff were found many ruins of temples of worship built of well-cut square stone?. A comparison of the collec tion of pottery and implements gathered in the cliff houses by the exploring party with those obtain ed in the Pueblo villages strength ened the theory that the Pueblo Indians are the degenerate decendants of the once powerful race that built the ruined cities of the plains, and then, reti eating before .some warlike foe, carved out those sinjjular dwellings on the sheer walls of dizzy precipic es and found in them, it may be for centuries, both fortresses and homes. Perhaps the hieroglyphic inscriptions seen by Mr. Stevenson will one day be deciphered, and be found to contain the tragic his- j lory of the wasting away, hx wars and famines, of this ill-fated peo ple, who, like the coney of the Bible, made the rocks their refuge. K. Y. Tribune. Disastrous Mis-Queue. A few days since three China men who had been to work on the Canadian Pacific railroad, desired to come to this city, says the Seat tle Chronicle, to work on the street grades. Not having the necessary passports, they attempted to steal their way overland. Arriving at a point down the Sound where the citizens were decidedly of an anti Chinese tuin of mind, they camped in the woods. About 31 o'clock a party of six men, with the inten tion of giving the celestials a scare, icpaired to the camp, and quietly -i i.-1-jjiijj iijj in iiiu iiin;tiiiL'llj wiiu i .. :.,, .. u m.: ...t. .-.- viunui snirjiiiig, ai, u, given signal severed the queue from the head of each. "With a horrible yell the three celestials sprang to their feet, and, realizing the terri ble calamity that had befallen them, instantly started for a high rocky bank which at high tide ex tended out over the waters of the sound. Arriving there, the three, after uttering a few words, unin telligible of course to their para lyzed audience, joined hands and sprang into the water. Thcv ap parently made no effort to save themselves, but quietly sank be neath the surface, and are at this moment, doubtless, affording nu triment to the finny tribes of the deep. Two of the parties par ticipating in the fatal joke have left the country, but the other four will remain and bide the result. The value of babies has been fixed. A child less than one j-ear old is worth 14; between one and two 3ears, $19; two to three years, 2S: four years, $31; five years, 35; six years, 40; seven years, 50; eight years, G0: nine years, 70; ten 'cars, 00; eleven years, 123. These are valuations made by a baby insurance company of Cincinnati. The parents pay five cents a week for the insurance of their child. The rates on colored children are twice as much, owing to the darkey's twofold ability for contracting contagious disease. Alabama lightning tore the feathers off a rooster and threw him over the fence, but he was up and crowing before the thunder came. Demanding Damages for Beiue Hanged. Ben. Ilolton, colored, has brought! i suit in the United States court, at Louisville, against John Duncan and Alexander Duncan, of Old ham county, for fifty thousand dol lars damages. In March last a barn belonging to the Duncans, wealthy I distiller., was burned. Ilolton was the only man in the neighbor hood who did not help to extin guish the ilanies, and the Duncans charged him with starting the lire. A detective from Cincinnati was employed, but he gave up the case, satisfied that Ilolton was innocent. The Duncans persisted that he was not, and one cold night they aroused him at his home, while sleeping with his family, and took him to the still house, where they attempted to make him confess to burning the bain. They tied a strong rope around his neck and drew him up until ho was uncon scious. When let down and al lowed to regain his breath he de nied the burning, and when he was swung up a second lime he still refused to confess, and was hanged a third time, lie only missed death by a hair's breadth, and was confined to his bed for davs. Cowboy Life Persons unacquainted with the cattle business have but little idea of Ihe dangers attending the life of a cowbow. They are wild, reckless riders and have no regard for horse llesh. They ride at full speed up aud down hill, among badger holes, over sage brush and gullies it matters not and if a horse misses his fooling all comej up in a heap on the. ground lie may be unhurt or he ma be sadly disabled, with broken limbs and crippled horse also. They do their ioping and snubbing down for branding on horseback, and if by chance a spirited cow gets the bulge on a horse or a side pull on him, she will bring him broadside, 1 rider and all, in the midst of the hools of the excited herd, which are liable to trample him into a it in less than no time. The professional cowboy catries his re volver at his belL whereby to en force his demands, and recognizes no other law and yields to no oth er demands from his comrades. Lost His Treasure. An Ohio farmer having lost all his savings swore that he would never have anything to do with a bank again. Two weeks ago, hav ing ccme into possession of S00, he put it in the bottom of an old barrel in the woodshed, and filled it up with rubbish. On top ot this he put a dozen eggs and a set ting hen. Tjic hen attended close to her business and brought a dozen yellow chickens into the world. The farmer thereupon ex amined the barrel, only to find his treasure gone, lie cannot explain the m3sterious disappearance, as he supposed that nobody, not even the old hen, knew of the deposit of money. Perhaps it w:u all in gold "eagles" which took to them selves wings and flew away, in re sentment at being set on by an old hen. A Philadelphia convict bays he was sent to prison for being dis honest, and yet he is compelled ever-: day to cut out pieces of pasteboard, which arc put between the soles of the cheap shoes made there, and palmed off on the inno cent public as leather. "And now," shouts an excited exchange, "where shall we look for independence?" Oh, friend and brother, searching and long-suffering fellow-sufferer, look in the kitchen, look in the kitchen. Three Thousand Hooks on One Line. lIt ain't the hick of fish that worries us. but it's bait," said a red-faced, yellow-beared fisher man" as he overhauled a long trawl in a snug little cove 'near Bidde- ford Peel, -Me. ult tioes require a dreadful sight of bait to set a line! .r , , "u" ,u" ., ....J......V.V , x'. pun, accompanied vitliniluil,ti-n y nniiitino- in -i fnil nMino tlinr M.-ti-:itioii in the iKic-k part. Wall," musingly, "there's about -2,000 or 3,000 hooks to be baited with herring, clams, squid or what we kin get. Tt takes half a day to bait the trawl alone, and as fast as it's baited we coil it up in one of these 'ere bas kets. Sinkers are nut on each end and corks, and, when the end is over and von jest j row or sail off, slacken up until the end comes; then let go and stand by for an hour or so. You see you've covered a mile or ground, and if there's any kind of fislm' 3'ou ought to get from '200 to D00 pounds of cod, haddock or hake. 'A. cent and a quarter a pound is what we get; then the ccd liver and hake sounds brings up the price. Dog fish, a kind of shark, is very common just now, but their livers hardly pay for them." "Don't large fish tear your line?" we asked. "No. That's the beauty of a ttawl; you kin hook a 300-pound halibut, and he'll soon drown himself on the line that gives jest so much and can't break. To get bait for trawls we set these herrin' nets up and down the coast, and we git a good manv squids on 'em. A7". 1". Sun. Water Telescopes. Considering the cheap and, easy construction of these usefiiliutru inonLs, it is wonderful titey are not used more .than they are, as by employing them, extremely inter esting observations can be made jon the denizens of ea or river. jTo make :l walcr '''fpe, pto- cure a tube made cf tin, and fun nel-shaped, about three and a half feet long, and nine inches in diameter at the broadest end. Ft should l.e wide enough at the top to take in the observer's eye, and the inside should be painted black. At the bottom or wide end, a clear piece of glass must be insert ed, with a little lead, in the form of a ring, to weigh the tube. When the water is immersed in clear water, it is astonishing how many fathoms down the observer can see. One of these, simple contrivances will greatly enchance the pleasure of water-picnics, as much amusement would be afford ed by watching the inhabitants below, and it would also prove very useful in surveying deep places that have been ground baited, for, if no fish were collect ed there, another spot would naturally be chosen. The Nor wegians employ this instrument hugely for ascertaining the posi tion of herring-shoals, and in their cod-fisheries. Often, by the use of the telescope, they discover fish which otherwise they would not have known of. Harpers "Weekly.
