The Wheat Jlarrest.
Fkom various portions of Ore
gon and Y:isliington come flatter
ing reports of the wheat harvest, '
although it is two weeks early in
making a proper estimate. In
but a few unimpoitnnt localities
has.the yield been small, while in
principal districts, especially of
the "Willammette valley, it has been
enormous the heaviest ever
gathered. In "Washington county
many fields average GO bushels to
the acre, while the lowest reported
is 27A-, and so clean as not to re
quire being put through a cleaner
before, shipment. As near as can
be estimated at the present time
we will have for shipment.Jforeign,
at least 200,000 "tons; and if we
are not far astray., those figures
will be largely increased, as Linn
county alone has a harvest of GOV
000 tons. During the past week
the rates were stiff, as purchases
wore necessary for cargo to avoid
demurrage. In the absence of
transactions, nominal quotations
only can be given. Walla Walla,
f. o. b., l.oT.V; Valley, f. o. b.,
l.GO "jp cental. Five cents
cental must In deducted from
above rates if only delivered
alongside. J'ortland Journal of
Commerce.
Aristocratic LnbYjiii!r.
Much has been said abeu:
Conkling1s honesty and his con
tempt of many of the practices
which are occasionally indulged
in by public men. it is now
proving to be a fiction; Conkling
does not lobbv around the cor
ners of legislative halls, but con
ducts his business in an aristo
cratic sort of way, and practices
his art upon the governor of a
btate, or the President of the
United States. For "a fifteen
thousand dollar fee he secured a
Presidential veto from Arthur,
congress having passed a bill
which the foreign steamship com
panies did not like. le had less
success as a practitioner before
Governor Cornell, having been
unable to consummate a hundred
thousand dollar swindle for .lay
Gould, for which he had received
a fee as an ''attorney. That is
tlse cause of the present hostility
of some of the stalwarts, to one of
the most distinguished men that
ever represented the stale, of Xcw
Ybtk. The same sort of hostility
may be anticipated by magistrates
- who do not decide cases in a way
to suit the distinguished advocate
who can get princely fee.-, for me
diocrc speeches. In all of this
there is not a thing which any
court would decide to be illegal
or criminal, yet one would be pe
culiarly blunt in his moral percep-
- lions, who would not reo-ard it as
bordering on the infamous. A
political boss who is stiong enough
to place a judge upon the bench,
will naturally be vor apt to win
Ins big cases: when a biff fee is
given to the boss, it is not for his
ordinary services as an attorney,
but his influence as a political
manager. There are thousands of
men, who could make before Pres
ident Arthur or Governor Cornell,
just as good an argument as Conk
ling, and who would be regarded
as being well paid if the' received
a fee of five hundred dollars.
Conkling is only one of a multi
tude' .of lawyer-politicians who
secure ridiculously large fees for
an apparently simple service. Tt
is an aristocratic species of lobby
ing which may contain the very
worst species of corruption, and
which cannot, be broken up until
the whole system of machine poli
tics has been destroyed. The peo
ple of many of the states are now
engaged in that laudable, under-takinp-.
A notice in another column
calls for a meeting of the Astoria
Chamber of Commerce this even
ing. The- object for which the
- meeting is called should insure a
llarG attendance. Renewed inter- j
