There arc not many who give
much attention to the dishonesty
ui cuiuuieicc; me wicucuness oil
the office-holders, the office - seek -
of commerce; the wickedness of
ers and of the bosses is vers
prominently discussed, but they
do noi represent all of the de-
pravity in the world. It is diffi
cult to purchase most o'f the
articles which we need for food
and drink, for clothing, or for the
luxuries with which we would like
to surround ourselves without
being cheated in the quality. It
has even been shown flial a very
large portion of the drugs which
arc for the alleviation of diseased
mankind, are adulterated and not
what they purport to be. Frauds
in the nianufactun of medicines
nullify the efforts of physicians
and are doubtless accountable for
many deaths which would not!
otherwise occur. It is difficult to;
fmdpure woolen, pure linen 01 j
pure silk goods, no matter how
great a price nun be offered,
there is not an .viieh in the
grocery line that 'a, not extensively
counterfeited or adulterated. It
is n matter of very great difficulty
to find spirituous liquors which
have not- in some way been
adulterated, often with active poi
son. The most efficient machinery
of government should be set in
operation to punish men who tim-
gain 11101103' undei false pielcnci-..
There ought to be the mot 1 igid
inspection of at leat every ailielu
of food and drink thus publicly of
fered for sale, and the manufac
ture of spurious ai tides should it
self be a crime, and a serious one.
The standaid of health would be
improved and longevity be inct eas
ed if there were reasonable protec
tion from commercial dishonesty
and fraud. The strong aim of the
government hould Je extended,
because offenses of this clas aie
difficult of detection and usually
lequire special skill. The fact
that puriou; dings or poisonous
nu adulterated food have been
ued, may often be levealed only
