For high- luinbia I7iv?r Salmon, put up by toned perqiii.sities, privileges and luxuries, the jolly old owls on the cannery on tlu coast par-king tin "supreme court bench would take ' der this label. Jones & Auderon, the premium at the world's fair at Sacramento, aro legitimate they would take the cake, the j cannery, but do not put up Colum oven, the baker and the farmer's bia river JWi, o that the firm (?) wheat field. In the firt place j of Auueioii & Co. must not be eery one of the judges has a room j confounded with them." in his house furnished by the! government luxuriously a perfect; libiarv in itself. The walls. are! covet cd with boet: caes filled with law books of great value and use fulness, the Moor4" are richly eaipeted, a great massive desk occupies the middle of the room, morocco lounges and eas chairs invite you to repose, and the body rvant is just v.-ithout the door awaiting, the tinkle of the silver bell. These, including the body servant, are paid out of Uncle SainV pouch. If you go to dine with a judge, or a secretary, an assistant ecretaiy, or an assistant anything, or a senator, behind your chair you will probably find a water, paid for by the government j as :t messenger or a laborer. Each judge has his own man. The supreme court has more officers and men than any similar institution in the world thrice over. One thing the-judges have not, except on days of cere mony, and that is, carriages. Many, indeed neatly nil of them, ' drive their own private carriages, but in all other respects they are about like cabinet officers, except more so. "With $10,000 a rear C retire?? three or six months vacation I every year, and the respect of all mankind, the supreme court judge can walk along the flowery paths leading to old age with the jolly idea that they are lucky as well as wise. Pacific Coast Fisheries. The denizens of the Pacific coast ate pre-eminently a fish-eating ; people, to which fact, perhaps, may be attributed the great brain force which is so characteristic of all who are so fortunate as to reside in this part of the world. Accord ing to Dittell, the statistician, the weight of the edible fish caught in a year is Sf,000 tons, equivalent to 100 pounds for each inhabitant of the territory covered by the statis tics. Oregon catches '.'OjOOO tons, California ? ,000, Alaska o3,000, and Washington Territory 2,300. The salmon catch alone weighs 20,000 tons. The catch of shrimps and crabs amounts to 3,2."0 tons, and of abalones, oysters and mus sels -1.000 tons. The value of the annual catch (including the en hancement in price by canning sal mon) is -s9,tG,000. The fresh fish are valued at $3,040,000; the j crabs, shrimps, etc., at GG,000; the oysfers, mussels, abalones, etc., at S703,000. The annual products of the fisheries of British Colum bia are worth about $1,400,000, and those of Pacific Mexico about $100,000 making the total value of the annual fish catch of our coast almost 611,000,000. Fraudulent Salmon Labels. The San Francisco Grocer is on the war path against fraudulent salmon labels. It says that it is rumored that parties are engaged in labeling salmon at Humboldt warehouse, and that a large lot of Sacramento river fish is being transformed into Columbia river salmon. The article further states: ""What the salmon is which is be- inir labeled at this warehouse we are not able to state definitely, but ! the fact that a fictitious label is be- j -j -ing used is a circumstance which . points only in one direction. A label seemed by our rcpresenla- Anderson & Co. W. know of no Starvation. The Corwin, during her voyage to Alaska, landed on St. Lawrence island, having orders to investigate the wholesale starvation of the na tives. At the first village at which they landed all weie dead; so also at the second, where fifty-four dead bodies were counted, neatly' all-full grown males. At another place 4.10 person-, men, women and children wetc dead. At the next settlement, twelve bodies, and at the following thirty were found. All the inhabitants on the notth side of tin- island, where whisky trader.- sold liquor?, are dead, not one escaping. The gen eral starvation occurred two yeats ago last winter. Since then the presence of the Corwin in the Arctic ha- broken up this inhuman trading in whisky. The empty whisky kegs arc seen strewn all about. The total number of dead bodies found on St. Lawrence island was over six hundred. The survivors say that the white trad- i ers ftom Honolulu sold whisky which the natives bought and got drunk on, remaining so during the season for laving in their winter. i6Twi!r!swtfrtil seal. f?- ilta.
