sition from D. P. Thompson

this city, was read, and refened to
the committee on public propei ty.
The resignation of Aug. Miller as
city sexton and lamplighter, to
take effect Septesnber 1st, was
read and accepted. A petition
from property owners asking coun
cil to have the grades of the cross
ings of Arch and Yost-7th streets
raised, six feet, together with the
report of the commute on streets,
was read, and report adopt
ed. The repoit of the street com
mittee on the resolution insttuct
ing the committee to communicate
with G. AY. Hume, in leference to
Cushing court, was read, and on
recommendation, adopted. The
same course was puisued in infer
ence to the report of the wharf
committee regaiding the petition
of N. W. Tallant. The police
judge's report tor July wa re
ferred to the health committee. An
ordinance . was passed amending
an ordinance presciibing the man
ner and extent of building a wharf
by X. W. Tallant. The following
claims were allewed: Ohas. Heil
born, 87.50; 1). 0. Kamey, $1.70:
J. .I.Riley, $1.70; J. C.Trul linger,
f).00; Homer Gibson, $3.30: Mar
tin Dillon, Sl7.2e: D. Whipple,
$21; 1. W. Case, 7U0; The
Astokiax, 1.7."; J. Y. Gearhait,
$21.70; Jewett & Kimball, $4.00;
U. Carruthers, $13.00; D. Whip
ple, $50; B. F. Stevens & Co.,
$3.50. The remainining claims
were referred. The ordinance re
ferring to the extension of Con
cosnly street was referred to the
committee on streets. The coun
cil then adjourned till l'l 11., yes
terday, when that ordinance was
read and the committee's report
was accepted. After the passage
of resolutions instructing the audi
tor and cleric to give notice con
cerning the improvement of Court
and "Wall streets, the council ad
journed to meet next Saturday
evening.

view with Senator Miller, who aid
of Republican prospects in Cali
fornia: "There will be a ery
close contest, but i think we can
carry it if wo nominate a good
ticket. Stoneman, the Democratic
candidate for governor, is a good
man and a strong candidate. lie
is a popular man and an old soldier.
I have repeatedly written home
that we must nominate the best
man. We ate not in position on
the Chinese question, but we are
better off" on that than the Demo
crats are. "We are in position to
say that we made an effort to ex
clude Chinese and succeeded part
ly in spite of the strong opposi
tion of our own pasty in the east,
while the Democrats, as we can
point out, made no effort of any
sort when they were in power.
Farley, the last Democratic senator
from our state, made no move at
all. He probably could not have
succeeded, but he didn't even try.
All that has been accomplished,
though it was not all that the peo
ple demanded, has been done by
Republicans.'
"I suppose the Chinese problem
is a great question its your state
canvass,', said the repot ter.

almost every claim provided for in

extraordinary receipts, it is not
