IMPORTATION OP INSECT
PESTS.
Of late a reat deal of Califor
iiia fruit has been brought lo Port
land. After the arrival of u Cali
fornia steamer from San Francisco
hundreds of boxes of this fruit
are distributed through the city
and forwarded to all the interior
towns of the "Willamette valle3
and up the Columbia. If there
are insect pests in California fruit
we are importing them and sparing
nn pains to propagate them and
spread them broadcast through
the land. Take apples that come
from that state and you will find
that a great many of them are
wormy. That worm is the grub
of the codling moth, the most
vicious of all insect pests. Talce
up any number of the Rural Press
and you will read about the loss
occasioned lo California by this
pest, and efforts made to destroy
it. It is destructive to fruit where
over it is known, and considered a
scourge to fruitgrowers. If we
escape it in Oregon thi year it
will be a wonder. Early in the
season, at the suggestion of P. F.
Bradford, Esq., an extensive fruit
grower near Portland, we called
attention to the danger to be ap
prehended, but there was then no
remedy possible. "We write in
obedience to our appreciation of
the danger, having intended to al
lude to it for some weeks, but we
are directly reminded to it by .f.
II. Lambert, Esq., of Milwaukic,
one of our most successful fruit
men, who suggests that during the
session of the legislature, which
will meet next month, suitable
legislation shall be passed, pro
viding by the most stringeut
statute, for examination of all im
ported fruits,- with a. view of ex
cluding such as cannot show a
clean bill of health.
The importance of this matter
cannot be over-estimated. It
means the saving of hundreds of
thousands of dollars to the pro
ducers. Once admitted here and
we shall have an eternal fight
against these destructives. Ore
gon has been exempt, hitherto,
from such damage as California
complains of, but shall not long be
exempt if unrestricted importation
of green fruit is allowed.
In pressing this matter wo re
quest our friends to express them
selves freely as to the best means
of legislation against, the danger.
We also urge its importance on
the press of Oregon and "Wash
ington, and hope to see a united
effort of all journals to make the
facts known and secure the pas
sage of a law that will answer the

Living Faith.
The signs are in the air. Men
no longer preach doctrines to
which they swore in their ordina
tion vows or they give to them
new meanings, at variance with
historic fact. Jt is beginning to
be permitted men to preach their
own view of truth undipped by
creeds. Sagacious and cautious
men are quietly sowing seed which
they know will by and by destroy
old notions. - Other men testify to
change by greater zeal in . preach
ing the old symbols of doctrine.
Every age has a race of men who
elect themselves to the care of oth
er men's beliefs; who appoint
themselves God's sheriffs to hunt
and run down heretics. Thev are
very busy. Men are ceasing to
employ creeds as lines of separa
tion between sect and sect, and
are shaking hands in a higher fel
lowship over and across thorn.
Creeds have ceased to be employed
as conservatories of piet Ortho

longer be kept in church or semi
nary by-crceds, but only by living

A Virginia Barbecue-
There were five fat mutton, two
beef and a veal frizzing fragrantly
over the fire all the morning, the
sweet savor sharpening the appe
tite, while it added strength to the
applause of the "-ld Virginia nig
ger" who was listening to the
speaking meanwhile.
A deep, wide ditch had been dug
some three or four feet in the
ground, and filled nearly with
bark and dry sticks and set on
fire. At one end of the ditch sev
eral large boilers were filled with
the meat and parboiled. Across
the other half of the trench stout
green sticks were placed close to
gether, and over the live coals the
smoking embers having been
raked away, was laid the meat, af
ter having been boiled and gashed
through and through. As it
roasted over the fire several negro
men were constantly. busy with
long switch mops, sopping a gravy
of black pepper, butter, salt and
vinegar from the bowls near by
and saturating the browning meat
as fast as it dried. It smelled good
and the crowd of lounging darkies
watching the process, knew it was
good, and longed and waited.
Near by were great hampers of
bread and cold ham, buckets of
lemonade, and long tables of pine
planks spread under the trees.

tops to keep their blood pure, and
should on no account be compelled
to eat such a plebian and unhealth
ful article as the potato. At the
end of fourteen days, the "owners
not returning, Mrs. Brummcr
raised thepricc, and this is the
main point involved in the trial.
The Judge adjourned the case to
October, at which time numerous
j dog doctors, nurses and hotel ser
vants are summoned to appear as
witnesses. Four lawyers are en
gaged in the trial.
A Novel Lawsuit

I ho trial of a novel and amus
ing lawsuit, involving the main
tenance ofninc pug dogs, was re
cently begun at Frankfort-on-the-Main.
The plaintiff is a Mrs.
Brummer, who had contracted o
take care of the dogs, and the de
fendants are, the Marquise Ifenri-
ettedeJ3cIadq and the Baron M.
Matthias. The joint ownership of
the pampered pugs left them in
tho care of Mrs. Brummer for
fourteen days, agreeing to pay
twelve cents a day for the support
of the handsomest one, .and five
, cents a day apiece for the others
j and the following bill of fare was
further agreed upen: Breakfast,
bread and milk; dinner, soup, meat
and vegetables; four o'clock ic
past, bread and coffee; supper,
in Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada
and New Jersey; -10 in Iowa and
Nebraska; Massachusetts ranks
with Rhode Island, New York and
Colorado at -IS; Michigan and Da
kota are equal at 47; Alaska is
not the coldest pait of the Union,
as is commonly supposed, but
stands with New Hampshire at -1G;
colder than these are Maine and
Wisconsin at 4-3; Montana and
Vermont at 43, Minnesota at 43,
and coldest of all, Wyoming nt-11,
The Yaquina bay railroad has
G,000 tons of steel rails in the
warehouses of San Francisco, on
which 1GS3000 tariff must be paid.
All of this must be paid by the
valley farmers to protect Pennsyl
vania millionaires. A fine thing is
protection, for the wealthy.
