tensively quoted, -writing of a
recent trip to Cbehalis and .Monte
sanosays: . .
"It was low tide when we start
ed from Oysterville, laying bare
thousands of acres of flat opposite
the long half-mile wharf only
reaching about half way to where
the little 10-ton steamer lay wait
ing to receive us. The driver of
the Tlwaco stage pressed his team
into the bay, until met by : small
boat called a dingy, into which
we stepped from the stage, and
were quickly taken' aboard. The
wind was blowing quite fresh di
rectly ahead, but the Gen. Gar
field plunged fearlessly into the
rising waves-sometimes covering
us with spray rounding near the
bluff white shores of Goose point,
and reaching the 'first landing
(Bay Centre) ten miles from
Oysterville, in about an hour and a
half. This village lies on the
northeast side of the point, and
consists of some fifteen buildings
wharf, house, store, school-house
and residences, with a light growth
of spruce and hemlock in the
background. A half-dozen oyster
boats were anchored near the
shore opposite. A narrow belt of
rich tide land borders Patia cre.k,
which flows into the bay here. A
few Indian huts are seen near its
mouth. Capt. Brown carries the
U. S. mail, and we now head for
North Cove, two miles east of
Toke point light I10u.se. The
Indian village of Georgetown,
containing some fifty people of
the Qulnault tribe, is .situated on
the shore some two or three miles
to the eastward. The U. S.
government provides them with a
school, but no other assistance.
There is no landing at the ( 'ove,
and the' steamer lie out in deeji
water and sends the mail ashore
in a small boat. It is nearly dark
when we get under w:iy again,
and 10 o'clock before the captain
announces our arrival at South
Bend. This town situated on
the left bank of the "Willopah river,
about three miles from its mouth
is at present the most important
ant business centre of. the Shoal
water Bay country. Simpson &
Co.'s saw mill, located here, manu
factures about twelve million feet
of lumber annually, shipping in
their own vessels to San Fran
eisco. Thoy employ forty men at
the mill, and a much larger foice
in their numerous logging camps.
There are extensive bodies of
excellent fir and spruce timber
upon the head waters of the Wil
lopah and Nasei rivers. John
Dunn brings down four million
feet a year - from Mill creek, a
branch of the former; A. Soules,
two million; and Joe Goodell and
J. Fowler, one million each, from
the main "Willopah; and J. .U.
Rhea and H. Ellis, three and a
half million feet more from, the
south fork of that river. Mr. Dunn
informs me that the loss scale on
an average about 1000 feet, for
winch they receive 4.7o per 1 000.
Capt. S. C. Mitchell is building at
South Bend for Messrs. A. Craw
ford, John Wood & Co., a fine
vessel of 390 tons burden, which
will be launched early in the fall.
Boats drawing eight feet can reach
this'point at low tide.
We remain over night here,
finding quite comfortable accom
modations and good fare, at the
South Bend hotel, by S. S. Ewiug.
In the morning we aemd the river
nine miles further to Woodward's
Landing, at the head of steamboat
navigation on the right bank,
thirty miles from Oysterville. It
is quite free from snags, log jams
or obstructions of any kind, thre
wtt u.iu jci-.i. ui water on tiie
shallowest bars at low water. The
current does not exceed four miles
anftour in Eny place. TheWillo-
pah valley is over thirty miles in
length, varying from one-half to
I one mile in width. A considerable

just in time to secure passage on

entrance to Gray's llarhor. This
line makes regular ttip twice a
week in connection with the II
waco, Shoal water 33a3' and flray's

"We started from the Xotth
Cove house, irrs. Johnson, situated
in a veiy pleasant Scotch pine
opening near the bay; and eio
mg the point some !wn and a half
miles, most of the way through a
a thick growth of pine, spr.ueo and

for eleven miles, then recrossed to
Mr. Glen Peterson's, on tiie Gray's
Harbor side. He landed lieie
twenty-six years ago in an Indian
canoe, una now owns a lancu 01
5,200 acres, extending fiom ocean

besides a good dairy range, now
supporting thirty cows and other
