Ltli.i.r
have suspended their elicits, the ,
results beina: not -wholly satisfac-1 u
tory. This goes to corroborate the
assertion of last year, tnude by the 1
-Sew ork Sun, that the tieasury
of the United States might be
emptied into the sea at that point
without making the least appre
ciable effect.
This, from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer
is "a little more than
kin .and less than kind.' Our
northern contemporary is prone to
seize on too slight a pretext to slur
at the efforts made to improve the
entrance to the Columbia. As for
quoting the absurd utterances
of New York papers, the fact but
proves that the Seattle paper only
shares in the ignorance that
prompted the assertion. The
Postntclligencer must also know
that we have always been candid
about statements, and if airy at
tempt was made to improve, and
was unsuccessful; if any vessel
had difficulty in egress or ingress;
if any thing occurred on or in re
lation to the bar that would
demonstrate the necessity of its
improvement we Lave always
published it, without the slightest
attempt to cloak or conceal the
real facts of the case. So in this
instance. Lieut. "Buchanan's lat
attempt was a partial failure.
AVc are sorry in one sense be
cause any improvement, however
ephemeral, is an improvement, and
yet, it goes to demonstrate one
unchangeable fact, viz: that the
only way to improve the Columbia
bar is to narrow the entrance.
Now the importance of the Co
lumbia is sufficient reason for such
work', and no amount of sneers
from New York papers or interest
ed, captious remarks from rival
points can do more than delay
such work.
Ahead of Stanley.
The French Geographical So
ciety will sliorLly have a 111010
agreeable duty tiiati that oven of
feasting Stanley it is jino; to
dine tho Frenchman who stole a
march upon him. When Stanley
was last, heard of, it will he remem
bered, he was leading the grand
expedition, fitted out by the" Bel
gian company, .to tho navigable
part of the Congo. He had found
that the Congo was the great-waterway
of Africa, though) unfortu
nately, owing to the cataracts near
its embouchure, it was not directly
accessible from the coast. Tt be
came navigable only at Stanley
Peel; but once there traders on
the broad river could reach one of
the richest rcjrions in the world.
How to get to Stanley PoolV .Stan
ley could think of no better way
than to cut a, road of about 2S0
kilometres from the coast parallel
with the cataracts. t. Savergnan
de Brazza, the Frenchman in ques
tion, thought of a much better
way. It occurcd to him that from
the French station at Gaboon he
might find some alHuent of the
Congo floating directly into" the
pool. He did find such a river,
the Aiima, which is sepatated from
the Ogoone only by eighty kilo
metres of land, and the Ogoone is
in direct communication with the
French possession. It was a ques
tion therefore, of a land journey
of 80 kilometres as against a land
journey -240, or a saving of two
thirds. He said nothing but stole
quietly back to France, obtained
the necessarv funds from his gov
ernment, went back again, and
reached Stanley Peel by the short
cut in time to welcome Stanley on
his arrival. He had taken pos
session of it in the name of France,
made treaties with the natives and
dealt out French tri-oota. ... the,,,
for tlie' decoration -of their persons
. and property as lavishly as if they
had been orders of the Legion of
Honor.
