A work of an extraordinarv haracter lias recently been pub- islied in Italv bv Prof. Morselli. )f the Roval University, of Turin, Ch: of Il bears the title of "Comparative Moral Statistics of Suicide.' It is throughout statistical, and claims to embody the most complete re sults with reference to tlie sombre and melancholy subject of suicide that could be obtained from every "' , 71 "v 7 " u"m "lI availalile nuarter. 1 . .. I As-sumuin-that fiij;uns, carefullv , , ., , . -" collected and collated, as iIiomj m 1 ihis work pixfess to have been, can not lie, the iesults are singulaily interesting and inexplicable upon any ordinary moral or philosophi cal theory. From a notice in Na ture of an English translation of this work, we abtr.tet some of the slntements which areiriven as eon-l elusive results of the investhja lion. It is impossible, of course, to gainsay these statements or to explain the conclusion reached finin flip ,t:ili;iej. It vmiiiip:. ! " l Mtl however, a very considerable de gree of faith in figures to adopt the inferences thus drawn from them. In the first place wc have, what is held to be demonstrated from . ' fact that suicide has increased in almost all the civilized countries of i . Europe and the New World, from ! . the beginning- of the present ecu tury. In France oeciallv. there has been crease, buioide is snid to be raot freouent in the temnerato. zone. 4, ... Flat jilnins and the courses of large . vSl&Je$m$B0mmi "ealiticsTor suicide. The transition j period between spring and sum- mer, and especially the month of .rune, exercises the most positive influence on suicidal tendency. So far as concerns the influence of the seasons, this is directly at va-' riancc with the hitherto accepted opinion that suicides are more fre quent in damp, cloudy and dark weather, like that not uncommon in November. Suicide, it is said, is everywhere committed with the greatest fre quency during the lirst third of any given month, aud the first two days of the first third yield tin largest proportional number. The highest proportion of suicides among women is on Sunday. The Celtic race are found to be the least addicted to suicide, and the Germans to most so. As to reiio--ions influences, it is said that the Jews display an habitual resistance la suicide. The Catholic nations stand on the last step or the scale of suicides, while those exclu sively or chiefly Protestant take the first grade. In countries of mixed religions the inclination to ward suicide diminishes -in di rect ratio to the predominance of Catholicism. Those countries which possess a higher standard of general culture furnish the larger contingent of voluntary deaths. Concerning sex, the proportion of suicides among women is one to three or four men, except in Spain, where it is one to two and a half men. In England, however the number of young women who commit suicide exceed by more than a tenth the number of men. . In regard to different occupations, the following is tho statement: "First of all are the literary and scientific; all those, in short, who make tho greatest use of their brain power. Next comes the military, the statistics in regard to whom are very remarkable. In Prussia the average of suicides in lhe whole population is 301 per million, whilo in the army it rises to G20. In Austria the proportion is still higher. Tn the English army the suicidal tendency is more than tuple that of il,e civil-! ized population' Concerning the j methods and places chosen by suicides, the rone is the favorite insrument: next the water: then lire arms; aim IinailV, inning ironi; never uispizo, aim uiai ix, a ifoiic T , . . . , .... , ... a hi'ifht.
