finish loading in a dav or so. She
, i j -omin" . i
has on board .2,000 cases oi sal-
, i .. ,
racm. She will take on about two i
hundred tons of flour forward to
steady her. This salmon and flour !
aggregate in value nearly $400,
000. This is the most valuable
cargo that ever left the Pacific
coast. The vessel was chartered
by Astorians, loaded at Astoria,
and of the 400,000 which her
cargo represents, 38S,000 is the
direct product of Astoria. This
is worthy of comment. The sim
ple fact of a vessel leaving port
with the most valuable cargo that
ever set sail from any Pacific coast
port, is of itself an item worthy of
chronicle. The nearest approach
in value, of any of which we are
cognizant, was a vessel that left
San Francisco abont two years ago
with a cargo of furs. Her cargo
was worth about $295,0008100,
000 less than that of the Wallace-
town. The fact was telegraphed
to every point in the world that
had telegraph connection. AVo
presume -that when the Wallace
town weighs anchor and goes to
sea, the Portland agent of the
Associated Press will, as usual,
announce the vessel as leaving Port
land, and when the San Francisco
papers come up we will find in
them the following item:
"Portland. July . 18S2. The llr. Mi'm
Wallacetown went to sen this a. x... loaded
h lth salmon and flour from the Columbia."
This is the usual style. Astoria
loads the large vessls, but the tele
graph is mute. We would not be
understood as blaming the Ore
gonian. 'Tib not a question of
blame. Blaming anyone does no
good. It is a matter of justice. If our
Portland friends do not see fit to do
Astoria justice,it is cause for regret,
but there is no use in getting pro
voked about it. And while on this
subject there is another little, mat
ter to which we respectfully call
the attention of the Oregonian and
the Portland Board of Trade. Tn
their circular, which has been sent
to every portion of the world, that
body states that at Astoria twenty
five cents a ton wharfage is
charged. This is a mis
statement of facN. We do not
think the businessmen who consti
tute the Portland Board of Trade
would tell a dclihcrato no such
thing to a customer, so as to get
him to buy his goods at his estab
lishment. Now we would ask that
organization as a body if that state
ment of their's is not lying, what
is it. In an interview with Capt.
Shand, of the Wallacetown, yes
terday morning, we asked him,
as we have asked many ethers:
"Captain was this vessel charged
wharfage at Astoria?" Here is
his answer. "No sir! it was not."
Now the Portland Board of Trade
says wharfage is charged. Wo
say it isn't; so say the captains;
so say the city autherities: Who
islying under a mistake. This is
something that cannot be answered
by a sneer. Nothing is cheaper
than a newspaper sneer; but no
amount of sarcastic disposing of
this will rub it out.
The "Wallacetown is a new iron
ship, owned by Hargrove and
Hellen, of Sunderland. Last
December we published an exten
sive account of the Beecroft, owned
"by the samo firm, which wont out
of here with a valuable cargo of
wheat which was partly lightered
from Portland and loaded at Asto
ria. These shipowners also have
- the Respicadera, the Bowdon
which will be remembered as
having loaded at Astoria, direct,
three years ago and the Hospo
dar, five in all, built on the same
model, and noted for speed and
capacity. The Wallacetown left
Hull on the 1st of November, '81
swith a cargo of coal for Wilming
ton, California, and came here
.-from' that port. She draws 21
feet 4 inches of water, and is as
neat a model of a vessel as. ever j
loaded in the Columbia river. In t
compliance with our request Capt.
G. D. Shand, yesterday figured up
the difference in cost between
loading at Astoria and loading at
Portland. According to thai
gentleman's figures leaving out
