A Conslfcteni iic?)ul.
Thk latent from Arabi Paslin,
who at present monopolizes, t!io at
tention of civilization, is t'nal lie
is at the head of 16.0,000 men: is J
preparing to attach. Caire: has 2u0
guns planted for thattaek: is in
correspondence aim negouauon .
with natie chiefs and other disaf
fected persons.
"The world has formed a harsh
judgment of this manjfounded more
upon recent events transpiring at
Alexandria than from any well
ascertained knowledge of his true
character. The acts of incendiar
ism and murderous massacres com
mitted by his army are attributed
to his silent consent, if not his au
thorization, and this fact has tar
, ... I
nisnea Wnatever gOOU reputation I
he enjoyed by those who regarded
him as a patriot-, anxious for a ;
'constitutional Egyptian autonomy.
Whatever his aims may be, they
are not generally understood, while
his methods meet with almost, uni
versal reprobation, lie finds an
able defender in Geo. S. Batchel
ler,'ono of the international tribu
nal, in Egypt, who resided in Cairo
seven 'ears, and is thoroughly con
versant with Egyptian affairs. This
gentleman says of him: 'One
thing is curtain, that the original
movement of Arabi Pasha was
thatof a patriot seeking to re
lieve his countrymen of foreign
oppression, and to establish what
"is popularly known as home rule.'
In a two-column-and-a-half article
oE the New York Tribune, Mr
Batcheller vindicates Arabi from
much of the censure cast upon him,
and explains many of his move
ments, which to one unaequinted
with the man, he think.- are at this
time inexplicable. Lie gave credit
to Arabi for his accomplishments
was a scholar, and abilities :ts a
military heto. Praise of a kindred
nature is bestowed uj)on Arabi b
Mr. "Wolf, who w:is our consul
general in Egypt, lie teih us of
Arabi:
He knows all about the Tubed
States, its history and struggles,
and told me repeatedly thai his
desire was to have a constitutional
,jform of government. "When I
presonted him with a copy of the
biography of Garfield in" French,
he at once said lie would have it
translated into Arabic, so that the
youth of Egypt could proiit by it.
At my suggestion he ordered the
translation of the constitution of
the United States into Arabic. Tie
is not fanatic, but is a patriot, and
therefore resorts to many expedi
ents and devices not exactly in
consonance witn the view of
foteigners, who have neither love
nor sympathy with him or his
country.
Evidently it will take time to
enable us to read this man's char
acter in its historical light.
Americans can awail develop
ments, as they have no inducement
to form an erroneous estimate of
Arabi. If he can acquit himself
of complicity in the Alexandrian
outrages, they will be prepared to
judge him by a higher standard
than that of being a mere outlaw
and desperado.
