The Henry railing.
The following description is
the iinest if not the largest, ship
of American bottom that ever en
tered this port. Her builders were
Goss & Sawyer, the well-known
constructors of the sailing ships
Philadelphia and Joseph E. Ridg
way, both sailing from this port.
This magnificent specimen of ma
rine architecture is 23G feet long,
43 feet breadth of beam, and 27
feet depth of hold. Her regis
tered tonnage is 1,970, and carry
ing capacity 3,000 tons. She is
built of hackmetack and hard pine
woods, and appears to be as solidly
constructed as a man-of-war. She
has two decks and a spar deck, and
is supplied with a Kimball & Rob
erts' engine for handling the an
chors, pumping ship, getting in
and out cargo, and condensing
water. She is also supplied with
a very useful arrangement called a
chain stopper,which is applied to the
