Mrs. Stop's Idea. !
That "the race i? not always to
the swift or the battlo to the
strong," one of those absurd ne-
gations whose paradoxical chnrac- .
ter constitutes their charm to
some, mav nrobablv he the as- '
signed reason for the prese.it at-j
tempt of a woman with a mis
sion" to make herself notoiious in
California. Her name is Mrs. J.
W.Stow, she "edits" a paper called
"The "Woman's Herald of Indus
try," and she announces her inten
tion to run for-governor in the
coming campaign. She claims to
represent "An Idea.' It is just
possible that the masculine brutes
who monopolize the ballot box
cannot realize the feelings of those
of the other sex who seem to insti
tute a perpetual warfare with the
Almighty for not creating them
of a different sex, and those low
creatures may not fully understand
Mrs. Stow's" "Idea.". With the
laudable desire of instructing the
ignorant this self-constituted cham
pion of "Industry," sends us
copy of her remarkable paper, in
which we find marked her edito
rial, which is at least unique, and
posses all the charm that, novelty
affords. It is a thrilling produc
tion, and starts off in this way:
"Everything in this abnormal,
wholly masculine state household
has become so littered with party
issues, and flogged with debris
of partv strife and corrupt prac
tices, that a good housewife is
needed at the helm of state, with
broom and dust-pan to sweep up
and out the accumulated rubish
of years.''
After this effort, culminating in
the original spelling of "rubish,"
she relieves the Creator of a grave
responsibility by announcing that
she is "self-made," and makes the
alluring and seductive statement
that she is "in the prime of life,
uupicklcd with whisky and to
bacco and enjoys perfect health.
Believes in - honesty, not policy;
in reason, pot speculation; in
truth, not falsehood. She doe- not
fish, hunt nor play poker. Xo at
tractions can lure her fiom the
post of duty."
The Just statement being an un
qualified one is to be received witji
caution. After this our feminine
agitator voluntcprs the information
that she is
"A scholar, editor and orator;
she would make honestv profita
ble, season law with justice, put a
snaffle bit in the mouth of monop
oly; and, that she would abolish
probate -courts and burn the
widows."
Whether she cm count on unani
mity of support among the widows
is exceedingly doubtful. Scatter
ed through the columns of hev
paper are several fragrant breath
ings which are presumably a part
of her creed. It is unfortunate
for the" cause that .Mr,. Stow ig
nored the spelling book in her
early years. . Even wonien with
"'a mission" can not safely ignore
all conventionalities, and the mat
ter of spelling is hardly one that
can be relegated to the domain of
private judgment. When an al
leged woman spells in this fashien:
friteful," "welth," oritor,"
"buro," "deling,'jetc., the pity that
one naturally feels for ignorance
vanishes before the contempt that
is inspired by such ranting folly as
the above.
