Tho Canby will make two trips

tho 1. S. X. Co., to inako two trips a
day on Wednesdays and Saturdays

It ia announced that a Wisconsin
firm has just closed a contract for a
patent process for tho manufacture of
whisky from tho smoke of burning
wood, and a 25,000 plant is being
laid down for the distillery at Rerna
wood, in Shawano county. It is
claimed that six gallons of whisky
can bo obtained from ono cord of
wood. If some of our lumber men here
can get tho royalty for the Columbia
river they can make money out of .t,

treat, and tho animated manner and
vivacity of the graceful artiste showed
that she was thoroughly en support
with her audience. Everybody has a
choice in the rendition of piano music:
"St.Saens," was never better render
ed, and that beautiful wormm, "Sleep
WoU," by Abt, delighted tho audi
ence as given by Miss Wandesfordo.
Encores are sometimes out of place,
but when one is so charmed bj' the
music it is almost pardonablo to de
mand them. Tho gifted pair leave on
this morning's boat for Portland.

the idea is an Astoria one, the project

the idea. Tdeas, though, have com
mercial value, and it is but justice to
j an .Astoria mechanic to make public
tho fact thai to Mr. Arndt. of this
place, is duo the credit of having first
conceived the idea of the scrapnr ihat
is now doing such good work on the
bar. Perhaps, after all, il i sn even
tiling: Portland furnishes the money
and Astoria the braiiid.
The Devonshire.
The 233S ton steamer Devonshire,
ai lived in yesterday afternoon, twenty
four days from Hongkong. The cap
tain reports a voyage devoid of any
remarkable incident; there was one
death on board from iVyscnlcry. The
vessel and crew are as clean as it is
possible to bo under the circumstanc
es. There are 840 Chinese aboaid.
Tho Devonshire is owned bv the Mar
shall, of London, the same firm that
owned the Buckinghamshire, which
went ashore below here some years
ago. She is the first of the sea tramps
that came iu the Columbia without
danger of incurring a fine, as she does
not carry any more passengers than
her tonnage entitles her to.

Coming to the Seaside.
James A. Lawrence,the polygamic,
who has been rueing the folly of his
ways in the Portland jail for several
months, will be removed to Abloria
next week to remain till the opening
of the circuit court here on August
1st. It is not probable his trial will
occupy much time, as his guilt is too
well established to admit of much
doubt. He has become quite tamed
since his imprisonment, and does not
preserve that haughty demeanor to his
fellow felons which rendered him .so
obnoxious to them at first.
