A Juneau (Alaska) correspond-!
cut wtole. as follows on the 9th
inst: "Juneau City is like most
other places, when a long way oh1',
distance to the view enchantment
lends. There is plenty of rain and
snow up here. Where I am it is
about four miles from the foil. It
is where the mines are. Thoy are
all preparing to go to work; but
even now some of the claims have
from ten to fourteen feet of snow
in them, and they say that in bep-
tomber the "snow begins to fall
again. J am at work on a ditch
at four dollars a day; that is when
it comes out of a claim. Toaid up
in the basin is .iiO per week, and
ST in town. Stores are very rea
sonable up here. Flour is $3 for a

There have boon no cattle brought
in yet, but there is a man licru who
is going to bring, some from Port
tand on the next steamer, so he
says. I would advise no one to
eome here, as there is very little
work, and that only in the mines.
In fact I think it is a good country
to emigrate from. But the country
has not been prospected yet, and
much cannot bo said about it. It
may yet turn out a good mining
country; but the seasons are too;
short for men to get around."
On the loth ult., the steamships
Prinze Friederich and lMjfprer
cleared from Xew OiwJP with
41,93S sacks of wheat, initial ship-
mcnts from California via the
Southern Pacific railroad. As
yet the system of handling grain
in bulk has not been introduced
on the Pacific Goast, and these
shipments are in the form in which
the cereal product of California
are usually bandied.
