The Drinking of Blood For Its Re storative Qualities. 'You see the lady stepping out of her carriage," said a city official to a roporter, pointing to an ele gantly dressed woman of seciety: "What of her?" "She drinks a glass of warm bul lock's blood every day of her life consumptive you know. Fact, sir fact! If you want to know anything about these things go to the slaughter-houses and natch Vm for yourself, or if j-our life is too short, tackle the wholesale butchers at the markets." The reporter took a trip out to tho slaughter-house of Michael Riley, and stating the object of his visit to that gentleman, was advised to watch for himself. Daring tho half hour that ho remained there came five persons, who each drank from a class to a glass and a half of hot blood, just as the beasts were in their death throes. One of the five was a young man of twenty, fasbionabty attired, and with the air of a student who had burned the midnicrht oil to a dangerous extent, and also bore the traces of dissipation. Another was an el derly gentleman who came in a private and aristocratic brougham, drawn by two heavy English car riage horses, and driven bv a liver ied coachman, who knew just where to pull up as he had evidently been there before. The other three were ladies; one a young miss just blooming into womanhood, but with fragile form and ashy lips; she drank the ruddy beverage with a slight tremor and with averted head, while the elder ly lady who accompanied her drank hers with evident jelisu.and put out her tumbler for another glass, of which, however, she drank only half, Tho fifth person was a tall blonde of splrituelle appearance clad in a tight-fitting, gray shop ping costume, and of her it was said thathe had visited tho abat toir for several months. 'But I see onty the well-to-do," said the scribe. "Yes," said the jovial Mike, witli a-smile. "Only the wealthy can enjoy life, and everybody admits that there is life in bullock's blood You mustn't suppose, however, that we charge anything for the sanguinary fluid, on the contrary we give it away, and that I sup pose is why tho poor people stay at home and die of consumption because they boliove any remedy to be good or effective must bo high priced. Don't you want a glass?" The roporter stifled his emotions and strode rapidly away, followed by Mr. Riley, puffing and blowing from exertion. "If you want to know anything more about this thing, go down to Union Market and see my brother Walter." Mr. Walter Riley was found at his stand in Union Market smok ing a post-prandial pipe. Said he: "I talked with Drs. Bend and Digges about the efficacy of bul lock's blood for pulmonary pur poses and they are reticent about it. As I understand consumption, it is a wasting away of the lungs and impoverishment of the blood. Now, blood is a thousand per cent, better, to my thinking, than cod liver oil, and tastes better. You want the blood of a young animal, and if ycu let me blindfold you Pll bet you a new tile that you can't tell it from milk fresh from the udder, but more than one glass would nauseate you at first. You must go slow. When the con sumptives have tried the doctors they come to the abattoirs as a last resource, and I can tell you I have -seen some wonderful cures. Of course the doctors won't advocate it but I know one physician who nixes it to his wife rirht straight alone-, so he mutt have faith in it. , e :... .i... .: f;i fi,n.-.mirewburer. N. The miller subsequently failed in business, having put a fraudulent mortgage in possession and the bank replevined from him sucli wheat as was found in store 3,000 bu. Second, that the pledge in this nnse was noi invalid because of its e 1 i-i. r 1 1 specifying two kinds of wheat, but that the pledge was entitled to take an equal amount of each kind. Third, that not finding tho requisite amount of wheat, the bank might legally take an equiva lent from the Hour, as they did. A young man in a train was making fun of a lady's hat to an elderly gentleman in the seat with him. "Yes," said his beat-mate, "that's my wife, and I told her if she wore that bonnet that some fool vould make, fun of it." The voung man slid out. At the ne.vt station the old man poured out his hot coffee into the saucer to cool. "Look, ma," said a snickering giil, "at that old fashioned way of drinliing." "Yes," said the elder ly gentleman, "and it was old fashioned manners not to notice it." The elderly gentleman finish ed his journey in peace.
